Solving a word problem

Topic: Linear Equation with One Variable

Question

September 7, 2012

Its an linear equations in one variable. My father is three times as old as i am. If he is 26 years older than I am, find our ages.

Celine - Australia

22885

Answer

Let x = your age. Then your father's age is 3x.

If he is 26 year older than you, then 3x = x + 26.

Thus, you are 13 and he is 39.

Restrictions on a quadratic formula

Topic: Quadratic Formula

Question

September 6, 2012

Hello. I am trying to find the restrictions on a quadratic formula. The problem is the formula I have does not equal to anything. How do I go about solving this?
Thank you
Patrick

- Canada

22883

Answer

In the quadratic formula: x = [?b ± ?(b2 ? 4ac)]/2a, "a" cannot equal 0, because the result would be infinite.

Also b^2 must be greater than 4ac, because the square root of a negative number is imaginary.

Can't understand pre-calculus

Topic: General

Question

August 30, 2012

I am currently in precalculus in college I'm having trouble with it. I get how to do polynomials and binomials and all but the way the words are in the book but, I can't seem to understand what exaclty they are asking for. Could u tell me step by step and show an example of how to solve this problem.
find the value of k so that 3x-1=k and 7x+2=16 what is the book asking me to do and what steps do I take to solve this problem ? What rule do I use?

jazmyn - USA

22874

Answer

First of all, you should check the topic in our Algebra section. The lessons should help a little.

With the second equation, you can easily solve it for x:
7x + 2 = 16
7x = 14
x = 2

Then, you substitute for x in the first equation:
3x - 1 = k
6 - 1 = k
k = 5

x raised to the power of 2 times 3?

Topic: Multiplication with Exponents

Question

July 9, 2012

x raised to the power of 2 times 3? please show me the solution. Thank you.

x squared(3) = ?

- Philippines

22769

Answer

If you are multiplying 3 times x^2, it is always good to state the 3 first to avoid confusion. Thus if x=5 then 3*x^2 = 3*5^2 = 3*25 = 75.

However, if you are multiplying the exponent 3 times the exponent 2, you get x^(2*3) = x^6.

Remove brackets and simplify

Topic: Multiplying Binomial Expressions

Question

May 23, 2012

Remove brackets and simplify. (y2+y+1)(1-y-2y2)

Joseph - Nigeria

22674

Answer

The second expression may be puzzling. Do you mean 1 - (y^-2)*y^2 or is it 1 - y - 2*y^2?

Assuming the second item, neither one is a binomial expression, so you must use a multiplication method shown in the lesson:

y^2 + y + 1
X 1 - y - 2y^2
---------------

Then do the multiplication, term by term. It can be tedious.

Trigonometry problem

Topic: General

Question

November 23, 2011

How are you champions?
I have a question which i tried answering but there is a stage am failing to figure out, i wanna be a champ over this question.
Question:
Prove the identity

(1/cosec@ + 1/sec@)squared = 1 + sin2@, @=thitta.

Please help and make me a champion. God bless.

Collins - Zambia

22197

Answer

1/cosec@ = sin@ and 1/sec@ = cos@

(1/cosec@ + 1/sec@)^2 = (sin@)^2 + 2sin@cos@ + (cos@)^2

(sin@)^2 + (cos@)^2 = 1 and 2sin@cos@ = sin2@

Thus (1/cosec@ + 1/sec@)^2 = 1 + sin2@
