by Ron Kurtus (revised 5 February 2017)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. How is a spectrometer used with a telescope?

It is used in place of a telescope

Light from the telescope goes into the spectrometer to create spectrum lines

Light from the spectrometer goes into the telescope for magnification

2. How can a spectrometer determine which elements are burning in the Sun?

Each element has its own set of spectral lines

A spectrometer only determines if there are any elements

The spectrometer collects elements flying off the Sun

3. How is the velocity of a distant star determined?

By calculating the amount of shift of the spectral lines and their direction

By checking if the lines are red or blue

By calculating the intensity of the lines

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Astronomy. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
