How are satellite part protected from a solar flare?

Question

July 31, 2007

I have planned to do a paper presentation on PROTECTION OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS FROM SOLAR FLARES. I need help from you. All i need to know is, whether the parts inside the satellites can be protected using nano compunds, etc.? Or if you have any idea, please let me know.

Thank You.

Karthik - India

Answer

Solar flares are storms on the surface of the Sun that send out high energy x-rays, electrons and other particles. Methods to protect against damage include extra shielding, turning off equipment to avoid the radiation from causing excessive internal currents, and rotating the satellite to face sensitive equipment away from the Sun.

How long does it take light to reach Earth from the Sun?

Question

February 28, 2007

How do you figure for "light from the sun to the Earth in minutes and seconds"?

- USA

13271

Answer

The distance between the Earth and the Sun is approximately 92,000,000 miles. Since light travels at approximately 186000 miles per second, you can calculate the time in seconds by dividing 92,000,000 by 186,000. Then convert seconds to minutes and seconds.

Time it takes light to come from the Sun

Question

November 30, 2005

How long it take the light to travel from the sun to earth ?

Please show your caculated

Thank You

Kanyarat - Thailand

9158

Answer

The distance is approximately 150,000,000 km. The speed of light is about 300,000 km/sec. Since distance = speed * time, it would take 150,000,000 / 300,000 = 500 seconds.

500 / 60 = 8.3 minutes

How do scientists know what is inside the sun?

Question

September 27, 2005

How do scientists actually "know" what is inside the sun or other planets for that matter.
Trudy in Idaho

Trudy - USA

8320

Answer

Light from each element has certain characteristics unique to that element. Thus by analyzing the light from the Sun, scientists can tell what is burning on the surface, as well as fairly deep beneath the surface.

Likewise for the planets, the reflected light tells what material is on the surface. By the size and speed of the planet, they get an idea of its mass and thus its density. From that information, they guess what the planet is made of.

They don't know any of this for sure, but they get a pretty good idea and come close.
