The cat wants to know what the sound is and where it comes from. It wants to know if the sound represents danger or a possible meal. Rub your fingers together behind a cat's head, and you will see its ears face backward to try to identify the sound.
There is a natural reflex to close the eyes to protect them from light that is too bright. If it a dim light, the eyes usually will not close, because the signal is not enough to cause the protection reflex.

Must a stimulus go to the brain?
Question
July 25, 2004
I was tought in Boilogy class that all types of stimulus must reach to the brain in order to be responded and when I came to this web I got something different. Can you help me with this? which one is the correct one?
alula - Ethiopia

Answer
There are some stimuli where the body must react quickly, like pulling back if you touch something hot. With such a reaction, it would take too long for the signal to go to the brain and back to the hand. So, the reaction short-cuts the brain and the hand is pulled back quickly.
With less hazardous stimuli, the signal goes to the brain for processing.
Do plants like Rock or Country music better?
Question
March 28, 2004
Thanks to your wonderful website you have answered one of my questions. But I still have one more. Here it is: Do plants like Rock music,Country music, or no music at all? Please respond ASAP thank you in advance.
Daniel - USA

Answer
Some studies show plants respond to music. Perhaps it is the regular beat of the music that stimulates their growth. Rock music often has a heavy bass beat, where country music has a higher pitch beat. I don't know of any studies of which is better, but it would be interesting to try an experiment with that.

Answer
There have been science experiments that seemed to show that plants grew better with music. A French physicist and musician claimed certain musical notes caused the plants to create more proteins. But also, it may be possible that those doing the experiments took better care of the plants that were getting the music.
Theory on avoiding problems
Question
August 11, 2003
Hi, Wonderful site.
I think you're understanding of behavior can help me with a theory. I am looking for any studies or sources of information that can help me prove that people avoid dealing with or simply try not to think about negative things.
For example. Someone avoids calling an exterminator because the thought of bugs bothers them and the just want the problem to disappear.
I actually would need an answer soon, so if you get this please respond urgently.
Thanks,
Mark

Answer
I think you're realy looking at what motivates people to do things or not do things. People evaluate the promised reward (or punishment) versus the work required and the odds of getting the reward or punishment.
The thought process could go like:
A person may consider calling an exterminator to get rid of nasty bugs in the house. The consequences of not doing that is a house full of bugs that may spread disease. Taht motivates the person to consider calling the exterminator. But then he realizes it is alot of work and perhaps too much trouble. Plus it costs money, and maybe the bugs will go away. So he makes his decision to procrastinate. Soon, he gets used to the bugs and doesn't even notice them.
The major thinker on motivation is the American Abraham Maslow, who devised a six-level hierarchy of motives that he claimed determined human behavior. Checking into Maslow's work may help you with your theory.
Best wishes in your studies.
