Mini-Quiz: Zoo Penguins Change Behavior and Culture

by Ron Kurtus (revised 8 May 2005)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Why do penguins swim in groups?

They are social animals and it is often safer to swim in groups

Otherwise some will drown

It is better for them to attack whales if in a group

2. What did the Magellanic penguins do when introduced to the new surroundings?

They immediately took up their swimming routine

They communicated with the existing residents of their intention to escape

They attacked many of the other penguins

3. Why did the penguins take up the new behavior?

They were bored and wanted a change

They wanted to find out where the others were going

It could be a learned behavior or a triggered instinct

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Understanding Behavior. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
