Did George Westinghouse have a will?
Question
February 26, 2007
Did George Westinghouse have a will? If so where can I obtain a copy?
Did Westinghouse hold a patent for a train car coupler? If so was this invented by someone in his employ or did he purchase the patent rights and if so from whom?
Is the name Heinrich Sommerfied of Canton Kansas connected in any way to any train car coupler manufactured by Westinghouse? Reference US Patent 468,311 dated Feb 2, 1892. Also reference US Patent 447,375 dated March 3, 1891.

Answer
I'm sure that the Westinghouse did have a will, but I do not know where you can obtain a copy.
In 1868, Eli H. Janney patented the automatic rail car coupler, which began to replace the dangerous link-and-pin coupler. Westinghouse invented the air brake in 1869 at age 23.
Sorry I have no information on Heinrich Sommerfied.

Answer
Read our biographies on Edison and Tesla for some more information on the competition. Also, the references on Tesla should have more about the competition.
Edison started Edison General Electric Co. to provide DC electricity to the U.S. and Europe. But Tesla invented techniques for supplying AC electricity that would be superior to DC. Westinghouse provided funding for Tesla's ideas. In the end, AC won over DC and Edison got out of the electricity business.
Always admired Westinghouse
Question
June 4, 2005
With George Westinghouse over investing and losing the company I think of
Eastman and his company. Perhaps George Westinghouse experience in dealing with investments brings to mind that Eastman never borrowed money to invest and this policy lasted for a long time after he had died. However, I am aware that Eastmans father had a bad experiece with banks. I will always have a sad feeling about George Westinghouse who Weico always pointed to with pride, but keeping the sad story of his departure hidden. As as career Westinghouse employee I still hold (W)with pride and the highest respect. He was one of first to show respect and consideration in the working conditions for his employees.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It was a shame that J.P. Morgan and his banker friends took over Westinghouse's business. But they did that to many others too. Westinghouse was a great man, and it is unfortunate that he lost so much during the economic downturn.
