Is this father greedy?

Question

December 16, 2006

I KNOW A FATHER WHO PUTS ALL OF HIS SON'S HARD EARNED MONEY UP FOR HIM BECUSE HIS SON CAN'T MANAGE HIS MONEY. NOW HIS SON IS IN A BIND. AND HIS FATHER WILL NOT LET HIM USE ANY OF HIS OWN MONEY TO GET HIM OUT OF THE BIND IS THE FATHER GREEDY????

Answer

Greed is when someone tries to get more than is necessary for himself. In this case, the father is not greedy. Instead, he is somewhat over-controlling in trying to help his son manage his own money. Fathers often don't want to let their sons grow up.

What the father should do is to let the son manage his own money and sink or swim on how he well he can do the job. Otherwise, how will his son learn?

What the son needs to do is to have a talk with his father and asked him be able to handle his own financial affairs, so that he can learn how to manage his money. He won't be able to learn if his father is controlling the purse strings.

Why do people do such things?

Question

March 6, 2005

What causes someone to commit acts of Predatory Lending? An unscrupulous lender – typically a nonbank company that specializes in marketing to people with poor credit histories – dupes a homeowner into taking out a home equity loan or mortgage refinancing with unnecessary, excessive or undisclosed costs. Victims who have trouble repaying often face harassing collection tactics or are encouraged to refinance the loan at even higher fees. In the worst cases, people who can’t repay end up losing their home. It’s a problem known as “predatory” lending.

What is it about him (or what happened in his life) that allows him to rip off eldery people (not a face crime). What made the character change from good to bad?

Thank you

Answer

Criminal organizations have been involved in predatory lending. But among so-called non-criminals, there are companies that use deceptive practices to increase their profits. These people have no feelings toward others and are simply bad people.

But there are also workers for these companies who may be honest but they are "just following orders" and implementing these nasty practices. I wonder how they sleep at night?
