Leader being ostracized

Question

December 3, 2003

I came across your web site. I am glad to see the principles you are promoting. Funny thing though...My wife, a girl scout leader, is in the process of being kicked out from girl scouts, for trying to promote these principles. She has brought up issues of mothers drinking on overnight campouts and girl scout funds being used for things they are not intended under the rules. The girl scout council and other girl scout leaders are doing everything in their power to ostracize her and force her out of girl scouts.

Answer

It is unfortunate that some people who get involved in organizations with positive principles just don't catch on to what it is all about. It is obvious that the mothers resisting your wife's efforts are really interested in socializing and having "fun" no matter what type of lessons they are passing on to the girls.

I've seen this same type of thing happen in the Y and in church groups. Politics takes over and those who take control are blind to the harm they are doing.

It is an uphill battle for your wife. And I am sure that the higher-ups in the Gril Scouts don't want to get involved. They probably don't want someone to "rock the boat" and cause trouble.

There must be some mothers who agree with your wife's views and may side with her. Perhaps gathering some mothers who also are against this poor behavior, your wife may be able to win the battle.

Best wishes with this issue. Let me know how things turn out.
