Mini-Quiz: Chemical Equations

by Ron Kurtus (revised 16 January 2004)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Why is the ( ) symbol used instead of ( = ) in a chemical equation?

To show the reaction goes in one direction

To differentiate from a cookbook recipe

Because Chemists like to be different

2. What is the basic rule of a chemical equation?

The amount each atom on the right equals the number on the left

Similar atoms like to combine with different ones

Water is needed in every equation

3. If you put an electric current through water, you can break it into hydrogen and  oxygen gases. What is the equation for this reaction?

H2OH2 + O

2H2O → 2H2 + O2

2H2O → 2H2 + 2O

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Chemistry. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
