Google Adsense Unit Formats

by Ron Kurtus (2 April 2010)

Google Adsense provides a variety of Ad Unit and Link Unit formats for participants in their program. Ad Units are the most effective for gaining revenue, so the format and placement of those ads should be your first consideration. Link Unit formats can be more as convenient on your web pages.

Questions you may have include:

This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson.

Ad Units

Ad Units consist of one to several links to advertisers. They can contain text and/or images. You get a commission on for each click on an Ad Unit.

You can choose and ad type and an ad format. You also have choices of color scheme, fonts and corner styles. There is also an option to define channels for tracking the success of the ad.

Ad type

Ad format

Google recommends four ad formats that they feel provide the best results. There are several other formats that may also be used.

Other - Horizontal

Other - Vertical

Other - Square

Link Units

Link Units consist of several words that indicate the subject of the link. When a user clicks on a link, a page consisting of a series of related ads are displayed. The person can then click on another ad that will then display the advertiser's website.

Pros and cons

Although Link Units are compact, they do not provide a commission for the first user click. Instead, the person must make a second selection to give you a commission. Often people will not bother with the second click, unless they are specifically looking for something.

Formats

The formats for Link Units are a horizontal line of links or a vertical listing of links. You can choose whether to include 4 or 5 links in your Link Unit. You can also choose the color scheme for the unit.

There is also an option to define channels for tracking the success of the ad.

Horizontal

Vertical

Selecting a format

You are allowed a maximum of three Ad Units and three Link Units on a web page. Care should be taken in selecting the optimal locations for your Ad Units, since that is where most of your revenue will come from. The size used should depend on your page layout.

Link Units can be added in convenient locations as a fill-in.

Summary

There are a variety of Google Adsense Ad Unit and Link Unit formats for you to use. Ad Units are the most effective for gaining revenue, so the format and placement of those ads should be your first consideration. Link Unit formats can be more as convenient on your web pages.

Mini-quiz to check your understanding

1. What is a 728 x 90 Leaderboard Ad Unit?

It is a banner across most of the page, usually seen at the top of pages

It is a high, narrow banner that leads people to another page

It is the only Ad Unit that does not provide a click commission

2. Why are Text Links convenient?

You can use them without thinking

They provide up to five links, each leading to many advertiser links

They can take the place of content on your web page

3. Why should Ad Units be placed in the best locations?

It is a requirement from Google

You get a commission from a single click, as opposed to a Link Unit

People like to see a lot of ads when they go to a website

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in eCommerce. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
