Motivating children to like mathematics
October 31, 2014
How can children be motivated to like mathematics?
joseph - Kenya
Some children seem to naturally like mathematics, while others don't. It is good to get them all to see the value of learning math and to be able to use the subject.
Some teachers use numbers games and puzzles to get the students interested and familiar with parts of mathematics. Another strategy is to use real world examples where math is used. Learning how to deal with money is a good motivator that can also help in other areas of life.
Questions such as how much change would a person have after buying something can get the student to be interested and perhaps motivated to learn more. At the more advanced levels, learning how to calculate interest is useful.
I hope these ideas help. Best wishes in successfully teaching your students.

Suggested resources for teachers
August 25, 2014
I’m writing to introduce EducatorLabs.org, a new volunteer-based startup that conducts free research for educators. We put retired teachers and librarians (like me) back into meaningful engagement with other educators.
Would you be open to sharing our Request a Resource page with your education visitors (http://educatorlabs.org/request-a-resource/)? Maybe on this page:http://www.school-for-champions.com/arithmetic/resources.htm ? And by the way… thank you for the resources there… we added some to our collection, including the free education resource sites - always such a great type of resource to find!
I’m passing along some resources below that are in the same fun, educational vein as the others we viewed on that page. Please add them too if you think they’d be a good fit for educators:
Fun Facts & Trivia for Kids
Fun Car Facts: Simple Machines in Automobiles
Free K-12 Lesson Plans
Calculators for Kids: Teach Children Math with These Free Calculation Tools
ReadWriteThink Lesson Plans
Discovery Education | Classroom Resources
A Kid's Guide to Forest Fires
KidZone: Worksheets for Children
And, here is the link to our growing resource bank. We hope you’ll find this useful as well! :)
Fun Educational Lesson Plans, Activities and Printables
Let me know if you decide to post these - I will share the good news with the rest of the team!
Thank you for your time!
Rebecca - USA
Thanks for the extensive list of resources. They have been added to the Education Resources page. I am sure they will help our teachers.

Hi! I started a project at the beginning of summer, which I’ve had a ton of fun with over the last few months. My interns and I have been compiling fun, hands-on lessons to entertain and educate students in summer school (and, hopefully, beyond).
Now nearing the end of the project, we have several to share, in hopes you’ll share them with others on your site. I also wondered whether you had any others you could recommend (other than those you’ve listed here: http://www.school-for-champions.com/education/resources.htm)? If not, no problem!
Here is the list so far - I hope you enjoy them as much as we have and that you’ll share them with your other visitors. I’d love to be able to tell my team of interns that you’ve added some (or all!) of these links to your site - it would be such a treat to know their work was appreciated!
Math Activities for Kids
Financial Literacy and Real Estate Investment Lesson Plans
Crunch the Numbers: Do More Math, Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
ZoomSci: Science and Engineering Projects for Kids
The Kids' Guide to Simple Machines in Cars
Wildlife and Nature Lesson Plans and Resources for Educators
Forest Fire Safety and Prevention for Kids
Kids Know It Network
An Intro to Logistics for Kids
Astronomy for Kids
K-8 Space Education Resources
Thank you in advance for your time and for sharing these resources on your site, if you find they are a good fit!
Have a great day!

It is great that you and your interns had a good time compiling the resources.
Thanks for the list of resources. I added them to Education Resources.
Web address for student survey
Topic: Student Survey
July 30, 2014
While reading website pages, I saw your survey saying 17 of 33 students said "yes" to the question: "Is arithmetic difficult for you?"j. I need a website address so I can include those results in a paper soon to be published.
Second subject: I downloaded "Gravity & Gravitation", am still reading but like what I'm seeing so far...except for two issues: Phraseology in technical descriptions that misinform people and an opening statement saying how you "hate mistakes in book", yet have clearly publish this without good editorial assistance. If you are interested we may have mutual interests that would benefit by establishing a working relationship. Thank you, DCS
Don - USA
The web address for Student Survey Results in the Education section is at:
Those results were taken from the Arithmetic section on page:
Since the material is in a database, only the whole list is available.
I hope that helps.
As far as the Gravity book goes, I'm glad you like the material but am concerned about phraseology issues. It was edited but apparently not well enough. I am planning on coming out with a second edition in the near future to smooth out any rough edges. I will also get better editing.
If you see an explanation that is confusing, please let me know about it.
Wants to use results in dissertation
Topic: Student Survey
July 16, 2014
Hello, I am currently working on developing a survey for students with learning difficulties. I am doing this as part of my dissertation in Speech-Language Pathology. I am asking your permission to use modified versions of some of your questions for my research. Also did you assess the survey itself?
Brian - USA
Feel free to use modified versions of our questions in your dissertation. I would appreciate it if you would cite the source.
I really haven't done a scientific analysis of the results.
Best wishes for success in your dissertation.
Looking for science curriculum for young children
June 26, 2014
I am looking for curriculum to use with our Hot Wheels Club. I work with Kinder, 1st, and 2nd graders in a small rural town. I want to introduce them to physics using the toy cars, ramps, tunnels, curves, etc. Any suggestions?

Kate - UK
Your courses look very useful to teachers and students. I added a general link to your site from Education Resources.
However, it would be very useful if you would have your listings organized by subject matter. Then I could add links in the Science, Math, History, etc. sections.
Best wishes with your enterprise.
Need help for nephew is who is hyperactive
Topic: Teaching Hyperactive
June 5, 2014
One of my nephew is hyperactive. He is six years old. He will not sit and listen in the class. Always he will be walking. Till now it was managed till LKG. Now , no school is ready to take admission for him for first standard. Teachers will complain he will disturb the class and they cant handle him. I can understand their problem also. Please suggest us, is there any perticular schools or institutes for this kind of students ? Please suggest us, what can we do ASAP.
