Blended Learning

by Ron Kurtus (6 April 2004)

Blended learning is a mixture of the various learning strategies and delivery methods that will optimize the learning experience of the user. Classroom training sessions, Computer-Based Training (CBT) via a CD-ROM, Web-Based Training (WBT) can be combined as a way to train the learners. WBT can be on demand or at a specific time with an instructor and other students involved.

Questions you may have include:

  • What are the uses of each type of training?
  • What can be done to relieve this boredom?
  • What are the pros and cons of such methods?

This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson.

Types of training

The new formats of training include classroom training, self-paced eLearning and live eLearning.

Classroom training

This is the traditional training where the students and teacher meet in a classroom. This face-to-face training is effective in giving a personal touch, but it requires everyone to be in the same place at the same time.

Self-paced eLearning

Self-paced eLearning is that done at the learner's convenience with a CD-ROM or via the Internet. The CD-ROM allow for more multimedia effects, but neither include much interaction. Sometimes a chat room or email correspondence is included in this type of learning.

Live eLearning

New technologies allow sessions to be delivered live, with students accessing the class through their own Internet connection. This allows for interaction between the students and the instructor, as well as among themselves. Typically the class includes audio, video, and text chat.

Advantages of each

Each type of learning has its purpose and advantages.

Classroom

Classroom training is good for workshops, job training, and coaching. Exercises, feedback on activities and paper-based tests are used in the classroom.

Self-paced

Self-paced eLearning is good for simulations, online case studies and interactive learning modules. E-mail, bulletin boards and online assessments can be used in self-paced eLearning when presented as a WBT. If the material is a CBT, the learning is purely individual.

Live eLearning

Live eLearning is good for application exercises, online coaching and interaction between students. Online feedback, assessment, chats and instant messaging are advantages in this type of learning.

Combination strategies

There are a variety of blended learning strategies.

Developing team leadership

  • Self-paced to acquire knowledge
  • Classroom to have practice and collaboration
  • Self-paced again to support performance

New manager training

  • Self-paced to support performance and practice skills
  • Live eLearning to collaborate
  • Classroom training to practice what was learned

Sales training

  • Self-paced to acquire knowledge
  • Classroom for practice, collaboration and assessment
  • Self-paced to assess knowledge and skills

Summary

Blended learning is a mixture of the various learning strategies and delivery methods. Classroom training sessions, self-paced eLearning and live eLearning are the main methods. Combinations of them can enhance the effectiveness of the training.
