Answer
The "firewalk" is an expression that refers to the experience of walking on hot coals or embers.
If someone is not familiar with the activity, they might be confused if you asked, "Do you firewalk?" It might be better to ask, "Have you ever experienced a firewalk?" And then elaborate on what it is.
Now I understand about walking on hot coals

Attended a great Firewalk
Question

I attended a GREAT Firewalk this past May 07 in Niagara. I believe they are holding another Firewalk in the Fall. It really changed my perspective... I feel as though I can meet any challenge --- and be so much more than I thought possible. Check them out www.innerflame.ca
(1hour from Toronto for the person who was inquiring).

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, it is a great experience. You see those hot embers and think you'll never walk on them. But once you overcome your fears, it ia great.
We'll check the website.
Firewalk has nothing to do with religion
Question
October 20, 2006
I had done this coal-walking decades ago. This is very common in India where people do this for a living to show that they're possessed by God, hence they're not affected. I did it prove that it has nothing to do with any religious belief, but just science through preparation.

Kahunas, NLP and firewalk
Question
June 11, 2006
Hi I am interested in the article by Ron Kurtus on firewalking but I beleive there is more to the NLP than perhaps first meets the eye! check out http://www.alternativeapproaches.com/altapr/aahuna2.html although there is scientific backing I'm not sure this is a closed story. http://www.meaningoflife.i12.com/kahunas.htm This also has large scientific backing, I was lead to this from Michael Talbot's book The Holographic Universe which I quote Part 1: "A Remarkable New View of Reality" "Sit down before fact like a little child, and be pre-pared to give up every preconcieved notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abyss Nature leads, or you shall learn nothing. - T. H. Huxley"
An interesting read with supporting science sources from Pribram, Bohm, Einstein and alike.
Hope you find this of interest!

Thanks for the interesting resources. Tony Robbins used the firewalk to show people how they could overcome fear. Actually, it had little to do with NLP, which is related to communicating. We plan to have a section on that in the near future.
The teachings of the Kahunas relate to special powers that could fall in either realms.

In your questions, you indicatd you had no info on people who do firewalks, at least in the Toronto area. Natasha Secord, trained by the same people who trained Tony Robbins, does firewalks in this area. She resides in the Niagara Region and holds them across Canada. She can reached at fireflysun1@yahoo.com I will let her provide her phone number if you wish to have it.

Using hyponosis
Question

i read your explanation of why walking on hot coals doesn't burn. However, wehen I walked on hot coals, they were glowing red, ahving just been turned over, and the heat from them kept me 10 feet away until my turn. I can't accept your explanation as fact--i was in a deep state of hypnosis at the time just before walking. my psyche professor 30 years ago explained the power of hypnosis to cause a person to burn or not burn, bleed or not bleed. I had childbirth under hypnosis, and surgery taht usually requires anesthesia under hypnosis. can you further elaborate on the temperatures (we were told 2100 dgrees) of the coals that "don't have a high heat exchange ability"? I stepped on a hot sweet potato the next day (temp 400 degrees) and did burn my instep.

Answer
The wood used is soft and creates ashes which cover and protect the feet from the glowing part. You can feel the heat radiated at a distance, but the hot heat from contact does not quickly conduct to the foot. It is unlikely the temperature was 2100 degrees, but it doesn't really matter, since the rate of conduction is what is important.
The sweet potato does not have a protective layer of ashes and has a much higher rate of heat exchange.
Hypnosis can block out pain and can even cause a reaction similar to how the body reacts when injured. But it cannot stop physical injury. If a person could use hypnosis to stop a hot poker from burning the skin, then someone could use hypnosis to prevent a bullet from harming the body. You might stop the pain but not the injury.
