Praise, Esteem and Excellence in School

by Ron Kurtus (revised 7 July 2005)

If you know you did your best, you are excellent. In your role as a student, it is important that you do your best and produce excellent work. This will increase your confidence and esteem, as well as result in praise and other benefits. Excellence requires satisfying the homework requirements and even going beyond what is expected.

Questions you may have include:

  • What determines excellence?
  • What are the benefits to you?
  • How can you attain this level?

This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson.

Excellence

Doing an acceptable job in your schoolwork means that you have completed the assignment as required, it was turned in on time, and it was without errors or omissions. On the other hand, doing an excellent job means you have done your best and have exceeded the expectations of the teacher.

To some degree, excellence is in the eye of the beholder. If you have done your best, you may feel your schoolwork is excellent. But the teacher may have had different expectations and a different way to evaluate whether or not the work was excellent. That is why it is important to know the requirements and expectations before proceeding on an assignment.

Benefits of being excellent

Benefits of doing excellent work can be an increase in confidence and self-esteem, as well as recognition and praise.

Confidence and esteem

It is a good feeling when you complete a difficult school project. It can increase your confidence in being able to even more challenging tasks.

If you have done your best, gone the extra mile and produced what you feel is an excellent assignment, you can feel proud of yourself and your abilities. It is especially gratifying if you can look at what you have accomplished.

Praise

If your teacher and fellow students also feel your have done excellent work, you may receive praise or acknowledgement for what you have done. They will recognize you as a student who does his or her best to do quality work. A student with a reputation for doing excellent work will certainly get better grades than someone who often does a shoddy job.

Become excellent

You should take care of yourself to assure excellence. The first thing in ensuring that you do excellent job is to know the requirements for the assignment you are to do. You must then work hard to complete the task on time and per the requirements, with no errors or omissions.

The attitude of doing excellent goes beyond simply satisfying teacher requirements. It is delivering a product that is beyond expectations. You should put in the extra touch of quality.

You need to be healthy and alert to do excellent work. You also need knowledge and skill, as well as character to complete your assignments. Getting a reputation for excellence can lead to becoming admired and valuable.

Summary

It is good to do your best to produce excellent work. This will increase your confidence and esteem, and you may get praise from your teachers and fellow students. Excellence requires satisfying the homework requirements and going beyond what is expected.

Mini-quiz to check your understanding

1. Why isn't "good enough" good enough?

There isn't the satisfaction of doing your best

If it satisfies the requirements, it is good enough

You may end up with extra time on your hands

2. What does completing a tough assignment on time do for you?

It gets the "monkey off your back"

It gives you confidence in doing the same or better the next time

It is not a good idea, because then they will expect it

3. Suppose you did your best but the teacher criticizes your work?

Try to do better the next time, but also don't let the teacher drag you down

Tell the teacher he doesn't know what he is talking about

Realize that you aren't as good as you thought

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a champion student. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
