Wants A's and B's but doesn't do homework

Topic: General

Question

April 16, 2016

I just have a couple questions....ok so everytime I were study the night before a quiz I would still fail in all of my 7 classes I have in my middle school. Then in language arts I have a 58% that's not good at all. My teacher gives out really weird and hard homework so I really don't do it, but I know that's part of it because when your assigned homework your suppose to do and all. But I just wanna know how to get all A's and B's in my classes. If you can help please! Thank you ;)

Answer

It is good that you want to get A's and B's. That is a start on being successful.

It is a good idea to take notes in class. Often teachers will give hints about what is important and may be on a test. Also, notes make it easier to review the subject matter when studying for a test. Note that note taking becomes more and more important in high school and college. See Taking Notes in Class.

Shame on you for not even trying to do your homework. At the very least, go over the homework material to do what is easy to do. Then for the hard stuff, give it a try or make note of the subject. You can ask your teacher in class to explain the hard stuff. See Zip Through Your Homework for some tips.

I hope these ideas help. Best wishes on becoming a top student.

Stepson struggling in school

Topic: Reasons Students Get Poor Grades

Question

April 14, 2016

I have a 15 year old step son who has failed one grade and sporadically goes through a period of good results. Teachers have been saying he has potential but is never realised. He is not happy with his school but doesn't help himself by getting better marks to warrant him going to a better school.

Kevin - South Africa

Answer

15 year-old boys often have a struggle in finding themselves.

You might ask him what he really enjoys doing, what he dreams of getting (i.e. like a car), or what he would like to become. Tell him that you are just curious and do this in a non-judgmental way. Note that boys often don't want to share with their parents, but at least it might get him thinking about it.

Don't give him advice, but encourage him to go after what he wants. This could give him a direction and indirectly get him to do better in school.

If going to a better school is an option, see if you and your step-son can meet with a counselor in the school to learn the requirements. This would make the goal real, and he might buckle down and get better grades, so that he can transfer.

I hope these ideas help. Best wishes in helping him excel.

Answer

It is good that you want to excel, as well as having a goal to get int o the University of Columbia. That is a bog start on being successful.

Think about why you are having trouble in these two classes. Is it because you don't understand the material or just have trouble in your tests?

It is good to take notes in class to help you study later. Also, note that teachers often give hints on what is important and what will be in their tests. In fact, do your homework as if it was a test. This can help you when under the pressure of a test.

Although it is not easy to do, check with your teachers, tell them that you want to do better in class, and ask for some tips on improving your grades. They may point out things you didn't notice.

Check through our Getting Good Grades lessons for things that apply to you.

Best wishes on getting good grade and achieving your dream. I know you can do it.

Why is homework important after math lesson?

Topic: Purpose of Homework

Question

January 20, 2016

state and explain three reason why it is important to be given homework right after mathematics lesson

Kudzai Isau - Zimbabwe

26716

Answer

One reason for homework is to verify that you understand the material taught in class. Doing the homework right away helps this process.

Another reason is that doing homework right after the lesson reinforces what you learned in class. If the homework is skipped, you might not remember what was taught.

In mathematics, it is important to practice solving different types of problems and performing various operations. Your homework will give you that practice to help in understanding the principles.

Best wishes for success in your mathematics class, as well as the others.

We do have material on Arithmetic and Algebra that could help you understand the topics. Unfortunately, I don't have any material on Social Studies.

Consider the classes in which you do well. Often, they are classes that you are more interested in. See if you can apply those principles to math and social studies.

Also, you might ask your teacher for tips or ideas of how you can do better in those classes. Often, they can provide some helpful ideas.

Relationship with respect to teacher

Topic: General

Question

November 27, 2015

how to get a relationship with your teacher ??

andorian - USA

26568

Answer

Just being in class gives you a student-teacher relationship. However, you want this relationship to be positive and friendly.

The best thing to do is to show your teacher that you are anxious to learn. They like students who want to learn, as opposed to those who hate to be in class.

When you try to do your best, you feel better about yourself, and your teacher should appreciate that.

Best wishes for top grades in school.

Answer

I am sorry to hear you are getting low grades in school. Do you have any idea why you are having such trouble? Do you do poorly in tests? Do you do your homework? Are you having trouble concentrating? Is the class material too hard for you?

The first thing to do is to examine where your problem is and what is the reason.

Being able to do well in tests and exams is important. Try to take notes of important things in class and do your homework as if it was an exam. That gives you practice.

Make sure you are not being distracted in class and when you are doing your homework.

Although it is not easy to do, talk to your teacher and tell that you want to get better grades and ask for some advice on how you can improve. You may find out what you area doing wrong.

Finally, go through our lessons on getting good grades, as well as reading the feedback from other students. You may get some good ideas.

The fact that you want to improve is a good start. I am sure you will be able to improve and get good grades. Try to get top grades. I know you can do it.
