Two things can cause your grades to drop when you get to the 8th grade and beyond. One thing is that there can start to get to be many distractions that take you away from concentrating on your studies, such as activities with friends and outside interests. Another factor is that if studying was easy when you were younger, you may have been able to get by with inefficient study habits.
If you have many other activities that are taking away from your study time, you need to make sure that you allocate enough time away from distractions for your studies.
To check your habits, make a list of how much time you spend on various activities during the day. How much time is spent in actual studying? How many interruptions where there? How much time on the Internet or telephone? And so on. This can be an eye-opener to how you spend your time.
Another thing to do is to try to be aware of what are the important things to study. Some things in a book can be skimmed over, while other items must be read carefully. It is good to be able to distinguish between them.
Do not attempt to compete with others. Instead try to do the best you can do with your skills and talents. Some how are blessed with great talent often waste it. You can learn the most from seeing how the less-talented work to succeed than you can from observing those who have an easy time of it.
I hope these ideas help. You are on the right track to try to improve your studying abilities. I am sure that soon you will be getting the good grades you are capable of getting.

Answer
You obviously want to improve, learn and get good grades. Can you visualize the good grades you would like to get and how people would be proud of you? That will motivate you to work harder and not be so lazy. Being lazy means that you don't care much about yourself.
Sometimes it is difficult to catch on to the things the instructor is teaching. You may need a more clear explanation or some examples to help you learn. If you politely ask your teacher to make things more clear or to give you an example that will help you, it will show your interest in learning. Hopefully, you will have a good teacher who will help you learn.
You can also ask friends if they understood some material you had trouble with. They might help explain it. You can do the same to them, if they missed something.
