Answer
ADHD is not considered a mental illness. Usually it is caused by a chemical imbalance, but diet and even habits can cause hyperactivity. See our lesson on this at:
http://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/hyper.htm
Taking care of your physical health, like eating well and getting enough exercise in sleep, can help control ADHD, as well as some mental illnesses. Likewise, taking care of your mental health by having positive attitudes can help control the problems.

Answer
When you have poor health, it is difficult to do things, as well as to study and learn. Consider how you feel when you are so sick that you don't go to school. Thus, it is important to take care of your health. This also includes mental or emotional health. If someone picks on you, it can make you emotionally ill. Again, it is difficult to study when you have negative thoughts and worries.
Going beyond simply being healthy is to be in good condition. A student who eats well and gets some exercise will have more energy than one who doesn't. A student who has positive thoughts and support from others will do better in everything.

When a person is sick, it makes it more difficult to do school work or anything.
Why is being healthy necessary?
Question
August 29, 2003
In your section about being healthy i do not understand how being healthy can fit into your education. I mean it CAN make you feel and do better but are you really trying to say that staying healthy and fit is one of the 5 things to be smart. Just because you are not healthy will not affect your education or your grades.

Answer
Health is a major concern of all people. When a person is sick or has a health problem, it makes it more difficult to concentrate on other things, such as work or school. That is why it is important for a person to take care of his or her health.
A student with a disability or continual health problem has a greater challenge to overcome. But it doesn't mean that the student can't do well in school and even excel. In some cases, students with such problems actually become stronger, such that they do better than the others who have no health problems.
There is also an attitude issue. Almost everyone has some ailment or area that not function as it should. Some say, "I am unhealthy," while others will say, "I'm healthy, but I've just got some problems I have to overcome." The positive attitude is more better.
