Having trouble reading about business
Question
April 7, 2007
I would like to know how to read better, especially in subject areas that relate to areas and businesses I know less about. Would it help to make a conscious and direct effort to learn more about these areas and businesses or just concentrate on speed in the areas I am interested in?

Answer
The more difficult the subject matter, or the less you know about it, the harder it is to read that material. One reason is that some of the words may be unfamiliar, but usually it is because your mind must work to understand the processes explained.
For easy subjects, or subjects with which you are familiar, it is good to read through them rapidly. But for more difficult subjects, you need to read them more carefully and even several times. One technique is to quickly skim through the material, and then read it the second time more carefully.
I hope this helps you read and understand the material better.
How does being observant improve memory?
Question
October 3, 2005
Hello,
I was reading the tips on improving memory, and one of them was to be observant of your surroundings. I don't understand how that can improve one's memory. Can you explain? Do you have examples? Thank you!

Answer
Often people don't remember things because they don't really pay attention. It is like not remembering a person's name because you really pay any attention when he was introduced.
By being more observant and aware of your surroundings, you are more apt to remember what you see and hear. It is just like meeting a person and being introduced and noticing he had a food stain on his shirt. You would be more apt to remember his name ("Mr. Food-stain") by that association.
Observant people often have what is called a photographic memory, in that they can recall and picture most things they have seen.
