Stressed out because I can't remember
Question
October 4, 2005
Hi,
Studying is one of the hardest aspects of school for me. I can never remember anything i have learned from class after a few days even if i review it the night after class. Because of that, i have to review everything in detail all over again. For me, this takes at least 6-7 hours until i am completly satisfied with what I have learned. Is there any other way for me to aquire information faster? Please help me! I have a test in two day that I have to study for and I am stressed out!!!

Answer
Sorry I couldn't answer sooner. Hope you did OK in your test.
One thing to try is to take notes in class. You can put down what you think are important points the teacher makes. Likewise, when you study, try to either write down important points or mark or highlight them in the book. You don't want to write down or mark everything, but only enough so that it will give you a clue when you study later. Often just seeing a few words will help remind you of what you had read.
Another thing is to observe how you are studying. Do you picture things or do you like to hear the sounds of words? Some students are more effective picturing things and even sentences, while other are better in hearing them. Those students often talk to themselves while studying.
The biggest thing in every class is to learn the concept. Even in a class like history, if you catch on to the concept of what was being taught, you are better able to recreate things in you mind, making it easier to study.
Also, don't seek perfection. You need to have enough confidence in your abilities to do just enough to get a good grade, but not so much that you are worn out.
I hope these ideas help and that you will do well in all your tests.
