Answer
The edges of the cap are great places for water to sit undisturbed. Dust in the air can get in the water and collect there. Also, of there are small particles of algae in most water. If it is allowed to grow after a while, you can see it as slime. Even water that is chlorinated has such algae.
Wants to do something about dirty bottled water
Question
April 21, 2004
School for Champions,
As a registered voter, I am taking the liberty to make the attempt to change the problems with conaminated bottled water. The thought of drinking contaminated water that I paid $1.25 for, makes me doubt the purity of other products beyond water. However, this unfortunate situation also motivates me to try to put a stop at something that is known to be trusted but shouldn't be at all. To further my knowledge in the this topic, I ask of you to send me ANY information that will help, such as statistics, facts, etc. If you can do that, I will guarantee you my effort to make a difference in America. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Answer
We typically get distilled water in large bottles. In some areas regular bottled water is simply tap water in a bottle. Most companies are fairly careful with the purity of the water, especially when Perrier was caught having traces of petroleum in their bottled water. That cost them an enormous amount of business and trust.
My issue was that the outside of large bottles of water is often dirty and that gets into the water when they are put upsidedown in their resevoirs. Also, since the water is not chlorinated, algae will start to grow when the water is exposed to sun. Neither problem has to do with the purity of the water from the company.
We hope that the FDA monitors the purity of the small bottles of water. Also, Consumer Reports sometimes tests the different brands for quality.
Best wishes in your efforts to keep are food and drink healthy.
