Answer
It is good that he has some routines to help him remember things. Having a list to refer to is often helpful for people who are forgetful.
Your son may have problems paying attention to details, perhaps because he has an active mind.
He must motivate himself not to be careless or forgetful. Losing something of value to him can be a lesson, especially if he is unhappy about it. That is the best way for him to learn to be more careful.
I am sure that as he gets older, he will overcome this condition.

Answer
Some children (and adults) are by nature disorganized. Often artistic or musical people are much less organized that those excelling in the sciences. They have to make a special effort not to lose things and to manage their affairs. Although you can try to help him be organized, he will have to realize that he'd better get a system to avoid problems. It does not pay to punish or reward this behavior. If he loses something valuable to him, he has punished himself and hopefully will learn from it.
Your son is not hyperactive but instead just energetic. He may need some extra physical activities, such as sports to burn off the excess energy. Make sure he does not drink colas and other sweet drinks that children like, because they can add to his activity.
If he plays the piano well and enjoys it, perhaps mention the possibility of a future career in music. This can help his motivation in school. Note that children his age and older often start to rebel against authority and often get lazy in school. Looking for his talents and then encouraging him to pursue those areas help to give him direction.
Instead of praise or punishment, use encouragement to give him direction. Also, when he does well, tell him you are proud of him. Most children want their parents to be proud of them.
Best wishes on your son's success.

We have a lesson on Teaching Hyperactive Children at:
http://www.school-for-champions.com/education/hyperactive.htm that should help you.
Some children have medical problems that make them hyperactive. It might be good to talk with his parents to see if they have the same problem at home. Other children may come from a home that is either too strict or not strict enough. These are behavior problems.
Some schools have special classes for such children, but most do not have that luxury. You must consider whether the extra attention you give to this boy will take away from the other children and their learning.
It is not easy and I hope these ideas help.
7 years old son has problems paying attention
Question
October 18, 2005
Dear sir
I have a 7 years old son,who has problems payingattention to what is not
intresting to him.He doesnt read directions or follow instructions in his
class , But he differes from one day to another day . sometimes he acts normal
and sometimes he doesnt.
When in a conversation he seems not to pay attention to what the other person
is saying, but later he could remember the details of that conversation .
He seldom forgets anything.
I had consulted with at least 15 of the most famous psychiatrists here ,
but unfurtunately diffrent diagnisis and medicine which none on them
had visible affect on him . They test what they want like he is a labratory
mouse for them .
Resperidone , haloperodol , imipramine , ritalin , ... are some of medicine
they gave him.I am very worry about side effect of drugs on him . more over
he receives somatropin for his growth .His bone age is 4 years now.
he has a sensetive character, and easily becomes upset and stressed.
Recently i think ritalin causes weak memory in him , and i am worry about
that too.when he has stress he bite his nails , and bedwetting too.
One of his doctors tested his genetic(Rule out Fragile X syndrom Unrelated parents)
and also he had a Axial spiral CT-Scan of brain .
i am all confused and i dont know what to do .
thank you very much.with best regards.Mona Samaie.

Answer
Some children don't act like they are paying attention, but they really are able to take in the information. Often these are children who are intelligent, but their minds are on many things at once. Information comes in too slow for them to concentrate on one thing, since they are squirming and playing as if not listening.
Watch how he acts when he is playing with his friends. If he has trouble getting along with the other children, then there is reason for concern. But if he plays and has fun with others, he is a relatively normal child.
Although ritalin has helped many youngsters that are hyperactive, others say it did them harm. It is difficult to determine what to do. If he can get by without the medication, it might be better for him. Ask your doctor for advice on that.
Since he is sensitive, undersized and stressed, he needs some extra love. (But don't spoil him.) He can feel the pressures and concern you have and it can affect him. Tell him you love him just as he is. That will make him feel better. But also explain that it is polite to try to seem like he is listening to others and to follow instructions.
Sometimes being involved in physical activities such as soccer can help relieve excess energy and pressure. Also, try to keep a regular diet and schedule for him. Often children get much better as they get older.
I hope these ideas help. Best wishes in the improvement of your son, such that he gows up to be a healthy, well-adjusted man.

Answer
You will need patience to deal with him. It may take a time for him to become more organized in his life. He may be hyperactive or may even have autism. Although you can try to cope with the problem, it probably is a good idea to see a physician about his condition. If it is medical, it can be treated. Otherwise, the doctor can recommend local resources to help improve your child.

Turning to home schooling
Question
January 29, 2002
Yes Ron You are so right I have been in contact with a group of home schooler to get inter actions with her pears. Also she is involved with groups like junior theater plus others. I have talked with her and know she just does not like to be held against her will. I know this from her personify very independent and have confirmed it with UCSD This has happened two times this year once when teachers carried her up stares when she did not want to go and this time when the aid held and swashed her because she did not want to go into the class room alone. I could not feel good about leaving her in this school
Thanks

Answer
Certainly, they did not handle your daughter properly in that school, and it was good to take her out of there. Sometimes when a child becomes defiant and stamps her feet and refuses to do what she is told, it is better to use psychology on the child as opposed to getting mad at the kid.
I hope everything works out fine with your daughter in her new environment. I am sure it will.
Restrained in school
Question
January 24, 2002
Thanks for your reply. Yes I have taken her to U.C.S.D. and they found not a thing out of the ordinary. I am not having trouble with her, it was the school. After they restrained her with some force I have decided to home-school her. She is a very bright child and very loving. I still need a lot of advice.

Answer
How old is your daughter?
Something certainly must have upset your daughter at the school. Did it happen all the time or just once? It certainly isn't good that they restrained her with force. One would hope that they could handle the situation better than that.
The only thing I find wrong with home-schooling is the fact that the child does not have the interaction with other kids and does not learn how to deal with different sorts of children-especially those that bully or tease. At the very least, if you can get with a home-schooling group that has a number of children together, it would be better. Social skills are important.
If your daughter is fine at home, try to find out what upset her so much at school.
Long attention span
Question
January 19, 2002
YES I have a child who has a very long attention span, but is still hyperactive. I thought I had found a web site that may give me insight into how to help her. Like every you lump all to the symptoms together which is not helpful to me. I still need help sorting all of this out.

Answer
Usually short attention spans goes with being hyperactive, and that is why it is classified as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Such children are even difficult to talk with, because they jump from one subject to another. If your child is simply hyperactive or overly active, I believe it is a different type of situation.
Some children can be so full of energy that they are constantly in motion, yet they are able to join in with other kids in play and be normal children. It is just tough for the parent to keep up.
Since there are so many variations in human behavior, you can only get some basic information on the Internet. If your child's behavior is something that bothers you, the best bet would be to start with your physician to make sure there are no glandular problems causing the hyperactivity. If there is some other problem, the doctor can then advise you on a route to take.
Best wishes on solving your problem.
