Kennedy and Lincoln in 1951 movie

Topic: Lincoln and Kennedy

Question

August 4, 2015

In 1951 there was a movie made called "The Tall Target" about Lincoln traveling from New York to Washington for his inauguration and the character traveling with him to help thwart his assissination was named John Kennedy.

Answer

Thanks for bringing that up. There actually was a police officer named John Kennedy who discovered the "Baltimore Plot" to kill Lincoln. Another strange coincidence.

Was some of Nixon's speech not published?

Topic: General

Question

July 21, 2015

Maybe I am stupid, but I cannot understand why half of Nixon's resignation speech, where he criticized the other party and the government, was not published. Cannot anyone else take any criticism? He said he just did that to try to change highest level crimes shrouded in secrecy.

Barbara - USA

Answer

I've looked at Nixon's resignation speech from several sources and didn't see anything about criticizing the other party or the government. In fact, I don't believe the news media would omit such statements, considering their views toward him at that time.

Where did you see that half of Nixon's speech was omitted?

Was U2 the plane or the band?

Topic: Start the Fire Facts

Question

March 27, 2015

in the U2 thing, I do believe he was speaking of the band U2, not the U2 spy planes. However, I'm a younger reader of your site, so I may be wrong.

- USA

25869

Answer

Billy Joel mentioned U2 as something in 1960. That is the year the spy plane was shot done.

The band U2 started in 1976, but they really didn't get popular until the mid-1980s.

Heavy metal and suicide are separate subjects

Topic: Start the Fire Facts

Question

January 30, 2015

According to billy joel's website its "heavy metal, suicide" meaning they're separate topics

- USA

25734

Answer

Thanks for the feedback.

Several sources--including Wikipedia--do not have the comma. On the other hand, it is true that Billy Joel's website and several others include the comma.

I added the comma and updated the information on the We Didn't Start the Fire - Facts page.

Correction on Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev

Topic: Start the Fire Facts

Question

December 12, 2014

Sorry, but i find mistake-
Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev - 23 April 1891 – 5 March 1953)[1] was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor. As the creator of acknowledged masterpieces across numerous musical genres, he is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century.
Prokofiev was born in 1891[n 2] in Sontsovka (now Krasne, Krasnoarmiisk Raion, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine), a remote rural estate in the Yekaterinoslav Governorate of the Russian Empire. His father Sergei Alexeyevich Prokofiev, originally from Moscow, was an agronomist. Prokofiev's mother, Maria (née Zhitkova), came from a family of former serfs who had been owned by the Sheremetev family, under whose patronage serf-children were taught theatre and arts from an early age

Answer

Thank you for pointing out my error. I corrected the material on Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev, especially stating that he was Russian.

Rock and roller cola wars

Topic: Start the Fire

Question

September 2, 2014

In response 23817 in reader feedback for "We Didn't Start the Fire", Katie (not me) states her opinion that Rock and Roller cola wars refers to the problems in Hollywood with cocaine. First, I would point out that crack (cocaine) is referenced earlier in the song. Second, I would refer her to Billy Joels interview at Oxford in 1994 available on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx3T8pbDcms.

Thanks for the information. Your view is probably the correct one.

Correction on space monkeys

Topic: Start the Fire Facts

Question

June 2, 2014

Surely the space monkey reference would have been to Miss Able and Miss Baker, who launched in 1959?

Connie - USA

25019

Answer

Thanks for pointing that out to me. Able and Miss Baker were the first monkeys to successfully return from a space flight. I added the information for 1959 in We Didn't Start the Fire (Facts).

Correction needed in history page

Topic: Start the Fire Facts

Question

February 3, 2014

Really enjoyed site. Good information but a one inaccuracy that bugs me - insignificant as it may seem. The citation for Harry Truman states the headline read "Dewey Wins!" The headline in the early edition of the Chicago Tribune actually read "Dewey Defeats Truman!" not "Dewey Wins!"

Great site and I really enjoyed it.

L - USA

Answer

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I updated the page with the correction.
