Wants reference to Kennedy swearing
Question
August 26, 2007
I was looking over your lesson plan and while I can find the Time article you mention for Nixon, I can't for Kennedy. I think there are just too many of them! Can you provide a source citation for that article? Thanks!

Answer
I know I have a hard copy of the article buried somewhere, but I could not find it. Also, I couldn't find a reference to it among the numerous articles about JFK in the Time archive.
The only reference concerning Kennedy swearing is an article on profanity among various presidents at:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,944845,00.html
The article said that he swore occasionally.

I am not criticizing either man. But maybe just maybe Kennedy swore like a sailor because he was a veteran sailor????

Answer
Both Kennedy and Nixon served in the Navy. I'm not sure where the expression "swore like a sailor" came from. I don't think sailors swear any more than others in the armed services.

They were from opposite political parties and had completely opposite personalities. But they both served in the Navy and were both intelligent men. But in general, they were more different than similar.
