Added facts about Finnish-Russian war

Question

June 8, 2008

I appreciate the brief history of the Winter War and the facts stated. Please note however much is left out on this part of history. There is no doubt that Stalin planned on taking Finland and not just part of it as you have mentioned. Just look at what happened to Lativia, Lithuania and Estonia. These three countries including Finland were in the secrect protocol of the non-aggression pact between Hitler and Stalin that stated the Baltics and Finland where in the Soviet Sphere of influence.

While it is true that Stalin could have taken Finland by the sheer numbers it became too much of a drain and an international embarrassment to him. Finland did not "lose". Finland was the only European country that bordered the Soviet Union that was never taken over by the Soviet Union. Finland was also one of the few nations never to be occupied by a foreign power in WWII. The Continuation War was inevitable due to Hitler attacking the USSR. This action made the USSR an automatic "Ally" and Finland hd to defend itself and the only country Finland could get supplies was Germany(crazy huh). Britain did declare war on Finland, however never attacked Finland, it was a political statement. The USA never declared war on Finland. The overall consensus in the free world was that Finland was just trying to defend itself which was true!!! What else could the Finns do? Give up....not the Finns. One word SISU! Never give up!

There is so much more to learn about this part of WWII history for all nations.

best regards,

Erik Koistinen (A proud Finnish-American)

P.S. I have a great deal more about Finland in WWII I can add to this.

Answer

Thank you for your information. As with much of history, there are facts that are not mentioned or in dispute. Stalin could very well have his sights on Finland, but the Finns fought too hard to make it worthwhile. Finland did receive some shoddy treatment from the allies, although most of the public was sympathetic toward Finland.

I would be glad to hear more about Finland in WWII.

Note that before WWI, when Finland was ruled by Russia, my Finnish grandfather fought in the Russian army in their war with Japan. Also, in our website, we have Soumi t-shirts that include the Finnish flag available.
