Mini-Quiz: Cylinder and Piston Drive Engines

by Ron Kurtus (21 May 2014)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. What is the purpose of the cylinder-piston configuration?

It is used to convert pressure inside the cylinder into motion

It reduces the friction in a machine

It is an engine

2. How is the piston driven in a gasoline engine?

Gasoline expands and lubricates the motion

It is the cylinder that is driven in a gasoline engine

The air-fuel mixture explodes and creates pressure to drive the piston

3. What happens in a reciprocating engine?

The piston is driven back into the cylinder to repeat the process

Reciprocal elements are used to increase efficiency

The gas explodes and drives the piston out of the cylinder

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Understanding Machines. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
