Mini-Quiz: Mechanical Advantage in Machines

by Ron Kurtus (revised 5 November 2015)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. What force mechanical advantage is needed to lift a 100 kg weight 3 meters?

100 x 3 = 300

It depends on whether you use a lever or a pulley

You need to know the amount of effort force that is applied to determine the force mechanical advantage

2. What is the distance mechanical advantage if you must apply a 10 lb effort to move a 5 lb weight?

2, since the force mechanical advantage is 5/10 and MAD = 1/MAF

You can't tell, because you don't have any distances mentioned

50 = 10 x 5

3. What happens when you change gears on a 10-speed bicycle?

You multiply its speed by 10

You change the bicycle's speed mechanical advantage

The bicycle's speed mechanical advantage remains the same, but it goes faster

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Understanding Machines. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
