Mini-Quiz: Tools Used to Perform Simple Tasks

by Ron Kurtus (revised 12 July 2013)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Is a toothbrush a tool?

Yes, because it uses wedges and friction to perform a task

No, because you must use toothpaste to make it work

It is a simple machine, because it contains a lever

2. Why is friction required in a tool like a pair of pliers?

Friction is not needed, since a pair of pliers uses two levers

Without friction, the pliers would become a scissors

Friction is needed to for the pliers to grasp the object and for you to hold onto the pliers

3. When a crow uses a twig to probe for insects, is that really using a tool?

No, because a twig is not a simple machine

Yes, because it is a simple device used to perform a task

Animals are not smart enough to use tools

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Understanding Machines. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
