Experiments with
 States of Matter

by Ron Kurtus (revised 8 June 2002)

A fluid is a liquid or gas that is capable of flowing and changing its shape when a force is applied to it. Fluids have a number of interesting properties. Since you have been studying fluids, you have noticed some of the different properties they possess.

Following are some experiments you can do with fluids to either verify their properties or to apply those properties to solve some problem.

The effect of heat on substances is an interesting area of study. Heat can change the state of matter from a solid to a liquid to a gas.

You can perform experiments to discover interesting facts or to verify what scientists have claimed. Some interesting topics and questions concerning the states of matter include:

How does the temperature vary when a substance goes from one state of matter to another?

Does hot water freeze faster than cold water?

Do these experiments to answer your questions or to verify what you believe are the correct answers.
