How can you tell the N side of a magnet?

Question

August 9, 2009

here i am confusing the magnet is have two particular as N and S can you show me what part is same as positive and what part is same as negative ?
isn't there have a domain ?
what's the domain ?

lobsang - UK

Answer

The best way to tell what part of a magnet is the N pole, use a compass. The N side of the compass will point to the N part of your magnet. The N side of the compass is called the North-seeking side.

See: http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/magnetic_factors.htm for information on domains.

What exactly is a magnetic field?

Question

March 4, 2009

What exactly is a magnetic field? (Is it Ions?, electrons?)

John - Sweden

17375

Answer

No one really knows what it is. Years ago, it was thought that a magnetic and electrical fields were movement in a substance called aether. But that theory is no longer considered correct.

Although a magnetic field is drawn as lines from the N to S poles, no one is sure if there is any direction. But we can measure where the lines are.

Does computer monitor emit EMF?

Question

October 10, 2007

at the v. begining thanks 4 this site, really it's v. useful & helpful
Is the computer moniter(the back part not the screen)produce electromagnetic waves or not?

thanks v. much 4 ur concern

- Egypt

14508

Answer

Although some people have been concerned about electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation from the front of a computer monitor or television set, there is actually much more EMF coming out of the back of the monitor. It is uncertain whether that radiation is harmful to people.

Pieces of cork jump away from charges rod

Question

March 22, 2006

1 A charged rod attracts bits of cork. But after touching the rod, the cork pieces jumped away from the rod. Explain?

2 Two free charges +q and +4q are placed a distance l apart. A third charge is so placed tha the entire system is in equilibrium. What is the locaion, magnitude and the sign of the third charge?

Pl. help me to solve the question.

Rajat - INDIA

Answer

This is a static electricity problem. See those lessons.

Once the cork touches the rod, electrical charges are exchanged such that both the rod and the cork have similar charges. Thus, they repel each other.

Site helped solve problem after lightning strike

Question

October 8, 2005

After lightning recently struck a tree and an electrical line outside of our home, both our home and our neighbor's suddenly began experiencing strange power-related failures to certain appliances, switches, etc. Besides shorting out a wireless router, speakers and garage door openers, our TV (that sat on top of our refrigerator) started showing a purple "ghost" mark in the upper left corner. Stupidly, we went out and bought a new tv, thinking it had been ruined in the storm. Upon plugging in the new tv, we found the same problem. We moved and lifted the tv and realized something was wrong with the tv/fridge combo! We tried ceramic tiles underneath, a cutting board, plastic, but nothing helped. Then we Googled "refrigerator and tv magnetism" and your site popped up. We read your reader's problem, realized it was similar to ours, put a layer of foil on top of the fridge, and VIOLA! problem solved. Hooray for science! Thank you so much for your help. We are taking the new TV back and saving the 80$ to spend on foil.

Answer

The surge of electrons and the related magnetic field can raise havoc with many electrical and electronic appliances. I'm happy to hear that you were able to get information from our site that helped you solve your problem.

Yes -- hooray for science!

Refirgerator affecting TV

Question

April 3, 2005

In the process of remodeling,we built in a refrigerator. Now on the other side of the wall, in the next room we have our television. We are getting strong color in the upper left hand corner of the TV.My son tells us this is the magnetic field from the refrigerator and will eventually leave this permanent mark on the TV.Is there anyway to block this or are we going to be forced to replace it with an LCD television?

Thank you for your help,
N.Miller

- USA

Answer

It could very well be the magnetic radiation coming from the back of the refrigerator, although I would be surprised it is that strong.

If you can get a gaussmeter, you could tell for sure. You can buy them at places like Radio Shack or some TV repairmen have them. But that would only verify the problem.

First of all, move the tV away from the wall to see if the problem still exists. If so, you may have to get your TV degaussed to get rid of the spot. It may have been caused by something else.

If the spot goes away, then as an experiment, try spreading some aluminum foil on the wall near the TV and refigerator. See if that stops or reduces the problem. If so, you can put the foil on the wall behind the refrigerator.

Let me know if this helps.
