What is the matter of a quark?

Question

October 15, 2007

What is the matter of a quark? If mass is a property of matter then what kind of property is it? What is the mass of a quark?
Is there a way to define mass without saying that it is energy?
How do water molecules exist in water. It is indeed very difficult to picture molecules existing as such in material substances. It is difficult to see how molecules not joined and existing in isolation can give rise to a unified material substance with innumerable properties.

Answer

A quark is a subatomic particle of matter. Its mass is about 1/3 that of a proton. See: http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/subatomic.htm

Mass is not energy. Mass is a characteristic of matter. Energy is the motion of matter. When an object is in motion, it has kinetic energy.
