Is a passenger in a moving car moving too?

Question

October 15, 2009

If there is a passenger seated in a car that is in motion, is the passenger also in motion? Or is the passenger considered not to be in motion?

- USA

18511

Answer

The passenger is not in motion with respect to the car. But the person is in motion with respect to some bystander who is not moving.

Motion is relative to some fixed object.

Find the stopping distance of a moving object

Question

October 14, 2009

A particle of mass 2g moving at 50m/s is stopped by a frictional force of 100N.Find the stopping distance?

Simon - Kenya

18500

Answer

A newton is a kg-m/s^2. That means you must change the mass to kg. 2g = 2/1000 kg.

Work = F*d = mv^2/2

Thus d = mv^2/2F

2*50*50/1000*100 = 0.5 m

What are the definitions of the following words?

Question

October 14, 2009

What are the definitions of the following; distance, displacement and average speed?

Simon - Kenya

18499

Answer

You should be able to look up those words in any dictionary.

Average speed is found by taking several measurements over a given distance and dividing by the number of measurements. For example, if the speed of the vehicle was measured as 10 km/hr, 15 km/hr and 5 km/hr, you would add them together and divide by three. The average would be 30/3 = 10 km/hr.

Can a velocity-time graph have a V shape?

Question

August 15, 2009

is this graph is possible: that velocity-time graph has v shape?

- USA

18154

Answer

Although time remains constant, the velocity can change. The velocity can start high and then slow down until some time when it starts to increase again. That would be a "V" shape.

What is the difference between speed nd velocity?

Question

August 3, 2009

I just want to know the difference between speed and velocity and please elaborate

Elias - South Africa

18096

Answer

The velocity of an object is its speed when you also tell the direction.

For example, the speed of the object is 60 km/hr. Its velocity is 60 km/hr northwest along the highway.

What is the difference between motion and relative motion?

Question

July 31, 2009

What is the difference between motion and relative motion?

prakash - India

18086

Answer

All motion is relative to an observer or point of reference. A person next to you on a train may not seem to be in motion with respect to you. However, an outside observer will see both of you moving along with the train.

Often the expression "motion" is used to mean relative motion.

Velocity of the Earth

Question

June 18, 2009

hey there,i didnt get the answer for this question, can u please help :the distance of the earth from the sun is 93 000 000 miles.if there are 3.15times 10to the power 7 seconts in one year, find the speed of the aerth in its orbit about acceleration

chokwe - South Africa

17922

Answer

If you assume the orbit of the Earth around the sun is a circle, then its circumference would be 2 X 3.14 X 93 000 000 miles. If there are 3.15 X 10^7 seconds in a year (which means the Earth went a full orbit), then the speed would be 584040000/3.15 X 10^7 miles per second

Difference between motion and relative motion

Question

May 26, 2009

hi sir, my name is waris.
i can't understand, what is difference between motion & relative motion.
please reply

MUHAMMAD - Pakistan

17803

Answer

All motion is relative to something else. If you see an object moving, it is moving relative to you. But someone who is walking along may view the object as moving at a different speed relative to him.

When you just say motion, it is assumed that it is relative to you.

Studying relative motion

Question

April 16, 2009

How do we study the relative motion easiar?

Lahiru - Sri Lanka

17611

Answer

All motion is relative to something else. Usually, you measure motion with respect to the ground, since it seems fixed. But if you are walking inside a moving train, you are moving at one speed relative to the floor of the train, but you are moving at another speed relative to the ground, because it adds your waling speed and the speed of the train.

So when you consider the speed of something, you should always say that speed is respect to something else.

I hope that helps.

How long for a soccer ball to hit the ground?

Question

January 20, 2009

Marshall stands on a platform and kicks a soccer ball from 6 m above the ground vertically upwards into the air with an initial velocity of 4m.s. The ball hits the ground after 1.6 seconds.
Calculate the maximum height the ball reaches above the ground.
Calculate the time taken for the ball to reach maximum height.
It would be of great pleasure if you would help me.

Amos - South Africa

17125

Answer

This is a problem concerning moving a ball upwards against the force of gravity. You can see the equations on this type of problem in "Gravity Equations for Upward Motion" at:
