Answer

One reason to know about Physical Science and Physics is that it can help you get a better job when you get out of school. See:
http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/jobs.htm

Being able to figure things out--especially when you need to find out why some gadget no longer works--is useful and knowing Physical Science principles and methods can help you in that area.

Sometimes, it can be just plain interesting to see how and why things work.

Answer

Much of computer games concerns graphics techniques, but there is a shortage of people who know physics equations to apply to the games.

One place to look for information is at the Nigerian Community Forum at: http://www.nigeriainformationcenter.com/computergames.htm

You might be able to find others who are developing computer games, in order to gain more information about the business.

An interesting article about the business is at: http://www.fastgraph.com/makegames/intro.html

Also see: http://www.igda.org/breakingin/career_paths.htm

But ultimately, you need to find others who are working in the field or who have started such a business. Look close to home first in your own school. Try to find others with like interests. Then you can get more information from others.

Best wishes in your project and perhaps new career.

Wants to write physics games

Question

January 30, 2007

Dear sir/madam,

How can I start a class on writing physics games? I am a Physics teacher and I will like to teach and at the same time, create an extra-curricular activity for those who really like physics, mathematics and software programming. In a way, I also see it as equipping them with certain life skills.

Hope to hear from you.

Yours,
Randy C., PhD
Singapore (2 year college)

Answer

Unfortunately most courses that lead into writing physics games requires so much computer programming techniques that they can be discouraging. But it is possible to pick up methods on writing these games on your own.

I would suggest looking into Macromedia Flash, since it can be relatively easy to use in creating games, especially those using physics equations. Its background programming language, ActionScript, allows the use of mathematical equations.

A website for examining various Flash-based games is: http://www.addictinggames.com/

There are various websites that provide tutorials on creating simple games or demonstrating simple physics phenomenon.

Best wishes in your efforts.
