What causes light to slow down in a transparent medium?

Question

January 31, 2009

What would cause light to slow down on entering a transparent medium? If it did, what would cause it to speed up again upon exiting the medium? Once something is slowed down does it not stay slowed unless acted upon by some outside force?

Robert - USA

Answer

Light is an electromagnetic wave that has a certain speed in space. When it passes through a transparent material like air, the electrical fields of the atoms in air slow it down only slightly, because they are so far apart. When light passes through a transparent material like glass, the electrical fields of the its atoms slow the light down considerably. Once the light gets back into air, it increases its speed, since it is not longer held back by those electrical fields.

Why isn't light bent when perpendicular to the surface?

Question

October 23, 2007

A ray of light ebtering the second medium perpendicularly through the surface of separation shows no change in direction?

Amna - Saudi Arabia

Answer

Think in terms of a beam of light consisting of many parallel rays. Each affects the ones next to it. When a beam of light enters another medium at an angle, the first part to enter the medium changes speed and is bent by the effect of the other. But when enters perpendicular, there is no change in direction.

For example, consider a group of men walking shoulder-to-shoulder. If they would enter soft soil from concrete at an angle, their direction would change due to the effect of the soil. But if they entered the soft soil perpendicular to the surface, they would continue in a straight line.

Explained mechanism why light bends

Question

December 16, 2006

Excuse me sir , i have great dout in bending of light.why the angle or direction of light is changing, when light is passing from air to glass.what is the reason to change the path direction? please don't say this is property of light. please give the answer ,i like to know about this very briefly, if any mechanism was there ,please send me sir
thanking you

Answer

Light travels slower in glass than it does in the air. When a beam of light hits a pane of glass at an angle, the light progressively slows down as it enters the glass, thus changing the angle at which it is traveling.

Consider a formation of soldiers traveling in a straight line and then they reach a field of soft soil at an angle. The direction of the formation will change in angle as the man progressively as they go into the soft soil. The same thing happens with light.

How does light return to it original speed?

Question

October 23, 2006

Light slows as it passes through water or glass, causing it to bend, but how can it return to light-speed on its own once it exits?

- USA

12227

Answer

It is like driving from the pavement into a muddy road and then back to the pavement. When there is little or no matter, light travels at a given speed. When the light travels through matter such as glass, the material's electrical fields slow down the speed. Once it leave the material, it resumes its natural speed.
