Defining temperature in a solid with no motion of atoms

Question

April 28, 2009

how can we define teperature in case of solid where there is no translational motion of atom or molecules at all ?

javed - Pakistan

17668

Answer

Even though the atoms or molecules in a solid are kept in place by a crystal matrix, such that there is no translational motion, the atoms still vibrate in place. This gives them their kinetic energy. The only time there is no emotion at all is at Absolute Zero.

Temperature of box in sunlight

Question

November 12, 2007

1- What would be the temperature of a grey closed metalic box placed in direct sunlight?
2- Is there any relation if this box is in desert area or green area, in another words, effect of ambiant temperature?

Many thanks,

Marcel - France

14765

Answer

It is impossible to determine the temperature without knowing the exact color, the size of the box and type of materials involved. Grey is a vague color. You need to know the absorption and reflection coefficients. A copper box would affect the temperature different than a steel box.

Also, the outside temperature and season would be factors in the temperature of the box.

Thermal expansion for gasoline

Question

April 10, 2007

HI !! i want to know about the coefficent of thermal expansion for gasoline and other refined petroleum products

Amir - Pakistan

13529

Answer

See http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~vawter/PhysicsNet/Topics/Thermal/ThermExpan.html for a list of coefficient of thermal expansion for various materials.

Gasoline is 950 x 10^-6. There are too many other refined petroleum products to list.

Can a refrigerator be used to cool the house?

Question

February 2, 2007

If we open the door of a refrigerator in summer, will it cool the whole house? Why?

- China

13038

Answer

The refrigerating pump cools the air inside the refrigerator, but it also blows out warm air as part of the cooling process. Feel near the bottom or at the back of a refrigerator when it is running, and you will feel the warm air.

Opening the door will mix the cool air and warm air from the refrigerator, resulting in no real change in temperature in the room.

Why do some materials shrink when heated?

Question

November 5, 2006

Most things expand under heat, what types of materials shrink under heat and why? I'm wondering the science on heat shrink tubes and hoses. Thanks.

Garrett - USA

12314

Answer

A solid material that has water molecules suspended in it may shrink when heated as the water is expelled. It essentially shrivels up. Also, some materials undergo a chemical change that causes them to shrink when heated.

Heat-shrink tubing is a good application of materials that shrink when heated.

What affects a helium balloon?

Question

April 11, 2006

What affects a helium balloon and makes it lose its floatation -- temperature, amount of helium, etc? Why?

- USA

10815

Answer

Helium leaks out of a balloon because its atoms are smaller than air molecules. Adding helium to a balloon will make it rise faster, but it will also leak out faster.

Which type of ball will lose air quicker in the sun?

Question

April 10, 2006

I'm doing a science project. Which type of ball will lose air quicker if left outside in the sun, a leather ball (football) or a rubber ball (kick ball)? Why?

- USA

10808

Answer

One factor is the color of the ball. A darker ball will get hotter faster than a light colored ball. A leather ball usually has a rubber inner tube, which is just like a kick ball. But the leather does not expand much, even when heated. Expansion separates the molecules and allows smaller air molecules to escape. So a kick ball would lose air quicker than a leather football. But a rubber white soccer ball probably would lose air even less than the darker football.

Experiment thawing out different frozen liquids

Question

March 8, 2006

hi i'm doing an experiment for school, it's freezing differant liquids in bottles and then seeing which defrosts the fastest. do u have nay pointers to make should it runns to plan?

marc - Australia

10376

Answer

All the bottles or containers should be the same size. The same amount of liquid should be in each. It is ideal to do them all at once. You don't need too much liquid in each, otherwise it will take too long for the frozen material to turn to a liquid.

An extra thing to have is the initial temperature of the refrigerator and the room temperature. It is not essential, but they add a nice touch to your report.

Best wishes in your experiment.

Boiling point of apple juice

Question

February 22, 2006

I am doing a science project on boiling points of several different liguids. I can not find the boiling point of apple juice, and that is one of the liquids which I am using. I was hoping you could tell me what that would be. Thanks!

~L - USA

10189

Answer

The boiling point of apple juice is greater than pure water and depends on the concentration of apple and sugar. That varies considerably with the type of juice you use.

A 30% solution of apple juice would raise the boiling point about 1 degree (in theory).
