## Why a bicycle keeps rolling?

Topic: **Forces**

### Question

March 21, 2006

SIR WHEN ANY PERSON DRIVE A BICYCLE.AND WHEN HE STOPS PENDLING THEN BI CYCLE MOVES ITS SELF IS IT MORE OUT PUT THEN IN PUT WHAT U SAY. THANKS

GHULAM - **PAKISTAN**

10526

### Answer

Newton's Law of Inertia states that when an object is moving, it will keep moving unless acted upon by a force. The bicycle will keep moving, but it is soon slowed down by the force of friction.

## Is a machine that runs on gravity possible?

Topic: **Forces and Torque**

### Question

March 17, 2006

sir my name is mujtaba.in my countary a railway enginner invent a force of gravity engine in 1994. which runs on weight is it possible

ghulam - **Pakistan**

10483

### Answer

That is known as a "perpetual motion machine" because it will run forever on no outside power. Unfortunately, no matter how clever such a machine is, it will soon stop because of friction. If such a machine really worked, many countries would now be using it.

## What is the moment of force?

Topic: **Forces**

### Question

March 6, 2006

What is the moment of force?

chinedu - **Nigeria**

10356

### Answer

Moment of force is the force measured on a lever or wheel. It is the force in Newtons times the distance to the pivot point.

## Conversion Factor for Foot-Pounds to Newton-Meters

Topic: **Forces and Torque**

### Question

February 23, 2006

What is the Conversion Factor for Foot-Pounds to Newton-Meters ?

Or Vise Versa ?

Carlos - **Canada**

10203

### Answer

To convert from newton-meters to foot-pounds, multiply by 0.7380

## Amount of force it takes to move an object?

Topic: **Forces**

### Question

February 13, 2006

How do you solve for the amount of force it takes to move an object?

James - **USA**

10073

### Answer

The amount of force needed to move and object depends on what is preventing it to move. If you are moving against gravity, you need a force greater than the weight of the object. If you are moving against the force of friction, you need a force greater than the friction.

## Force that slows objects in air

Topic: **Forces**

### Question

January 26, 2006

whats name of the force that slows objects moving through the air?

if 2 forces are equal we say they are?

josh - **England**

9817

### Answer

Air resistance is the resistive force that slows down objects in air.

If two forces are equal, they are in equilibrium.

## Are the units correct?

Topic: **Forces**

### Question

November 25, 2005

Hi, i have the following question to answer;

I have to calculate the magnitude of acceleration;

Mass is 1.4x10^3kg, and an unbalanced force of 3.6x10^N.

I applied the formula F=mxa.

My answer is 2.6N

Did I have to convert any of the numbers above?

Is my answer correct both mathematically and scientifically.

Thanks.

Bev.

Bev - **Ireland**

### Answer

F = m*a or a = F/m

Acceleration is in m/s/s or m/s^2 (meters per second squared)

Assuming you meant F = 3.6x10^3N, a = 2.6 m/s^2

## What is another name for scale?

Topic: **Forces**

### Question

November 23, 2005

I would be happier if you could answer a bit quicker, because I have a lab due tomorrow, but I understand if you can't. Is there a proper name for the "scales" that measure force? The word scale seems a bit general.

Thanks.

Josh - **Canada**

### Answer

Force sensor, balance, and force gauge are some other names you can use.
