Linear Motion - Homework Answers
After you have completed the Motion Homework, you can refer to these answers. Although it is better to have known the answer from your reading, the process of writing the correct answer on your homework sheet will help you remember the concepts.
1. Why do stationary things seem to move when you are riding in a car?
It is relative motion with respect to you..
2. How do you determine how fast an object is going?
Measure the time it takes to go a certain distance.
3. If a car went 120 miles in 3 hours, what would be its average speed?
40 miles per hour.
4. Madison is 60 miles away from Milwaukee. If you average 50 mph, how long will it take you to get there?
60 miles / 50 mph = 1.2 hours or 1 hr and 12 minutes.
5. What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Velocity includes direction..
6. An airplane travels west at 200 mph with respect to the ground. The wind starts blowing at a velocity of 35 mph toward the east. What is the resulting velocity of the airplane?
200 mph - 35 mph = 165 mph.
7. A motor boat is moving north at 4 knots, but the current is pushing perpendicular to the boat at 3 knots. What is the resulting velocity? (You don't need to give the exact direction, just the speed).
5 knots. (Use vectors. Draw a right triangle with sides of 3 and 4. Use the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal side.
8. Your car is going 55 mph on the freeway. Another car is going 55 mph in the opposite direction. How fast is the person in the other car going, relative to you?
110 mph.
9. What is acceleration?
Change or increase of velocity.
10. If it takes an airplane 15 minutes to go from 30 mph to 330 mph, what is its acceleration?
330 mph - 30 mp = 300 mph
15 minutes = 0.25 hour
300 mph / 0.25 hour = 1200 mile/hour2.
11. Give an example of something decelerating
A car slowing down
12. In outer space, is there any object that is not moving? Why or why not?
In outer space, everything is moving relative to something else.
