Because it is the attained velocity at or near the surface

To avoid confusion with underwater escape velocity

No one is sure where the expression came from

2. Why is the escape velocity of the Moon so much less than the Earth's?

Because the Moon is so far from the Earth

Because the gravity and radius of the Moon are much less than the Earth's

The escape velocity from the Moon is actually higher than from Earth

3. What might happen if a rocket blasted off at the gravity escape velocity from the Earth?

The rocket exterior might burn up before it left the atmosphere

The rocket would only make it to the Moon

The rocket would go into space and never come back
