Mini-Quiz: Confusion About the North Magnetic Pole

by Ron Kurtus (revised 13 February 2017)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Why do people call the N side of a magnet the north pole?

No one could ever figure out the reason

It is easier than having to say north-seeking

They actually call the N side of a magnet the plus side

2. What was the original concept of the direction of the Earth's internal magnet?

Its north magnetic field was facing the North Pole of the Earth

It had no real direction

Its south magnetic field was facing the Equator of the Earth

3. Why was the designation of the orientation of the Earth's magnetic field changed?

The Earth's magnetic field flipped directions

To follow popular usage

To go back to the original designation

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Physics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.

Be logical in your thinking
