Mini-Quiz: Neutrons

by Ron Kurtus (23 November 2007)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. How can a neutron become a proton?

It is impossible, because a proton has (+) charge and a neutron has no charge

By giving off an electron and neutrino

By becoming a neutrino, which is the same thing as a proton

2. What is the difference between Carbon-12 and Carbon-14 isotopes?

Carbon-14 has two more neutrons in its nucleus

Carbon-14 has an extra proton and neutron in its nucleus

Carbon-14 has two more protons than Carbon-12

3. What can happen when a neutron strikes the nucleus of a U-235 atom?

A huge explosion results

The neutron gives off atomic energy

The nucleus becomes highly unstable and splits into other particles

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Physics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.

Don't be neutral about things
