Mini-Quiz: Doppler Effect for Sound

by Ron Kurtus (revised 18 March 2012)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. If an ambulance moves toward you and then passes and moves away from you, how would its siren sound?

It would have a continuous higher frequency

The frequency would go up and then go down as it moved away from you

It would have a continuous lower frequency

2. What happens to the velocity of sound when the source is moving toward you?

The velocity goes up

The velocity stays constant

The velocity goes down

3. How does doppler sonar work when it bounces a sound wave off a moving object?

It measures the change in frequency of the returning wave to determine the velocity of the object

It measures the speed of sound coming off the moving object

Doppler sonar works by moving the source at some given speed

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Physics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
