Mini-Quiz: Traveling Faster than Sound

by Ron Kurtus (15 March 2008)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. How does the sound an an approaching aircraft sound?

You can't hear the sound

It starts to sound like a low-pitched growl

It has a higher pitch due to the Doppler effect

2. What happens when an aircraft reaches the speed of sound?

The aircraft catches up to the sound waves and they form a shock wave at the front

You can no longer hear the aircraft

Einstein says that nothing can go at the speed of sound

3. Why do you hear the sonic boom from a supersonic aircraft after it has passed?

You really hear the sonic boom before the plane ever comes into sight

The sonic boom fans out behind the supersonic aircraft

Supersonic aircraft are streamlined, so that they don't create a sonic boom

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Physics. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
