Beagle is overweight but we can't walk her

It is often so difficult to control the weight of a dog that loves to eat. If you use canned dog food, try to get the ones that are low fat. Also, you can mix in cooked carrots and broccoli in with her food. That will fill her up with not as many calories.
Also, start giving her less to eat in her meals. You can cut back only 10% and it can make a difference. Also cut back on snacks when she begs. It is so easy to give something when your dog is begging.
Often the same diet techniques that work on humans will work on dogs.
If you can find a good area to walk her, it would be good for both of you, even if just once a week. Also, dogs like the chance to sniff around.
I hope these ideas help keep your pet happy and healthy.
Can I give my dog Excedrin?
December 6, 2008
Can I give my 45 lb dog Extra Strenth Excedrin Migrain Formula for pain
Patty - USA (16912)
You should not use such a pain relief medication on your dog. Excedrin contains acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine. We are not sure of the effect of acetaminophen on a dog. Caffeine can be poisonous to dogs.
If the dog has obvious pain, regular or baby aspirin can help. Vets often prescribe Rymidal.
Samoyed just developed glaucoma
December 3, 2008
My Samoyed just developed glaucoma in one eye with an IOP of 24 when we first measured it. I've talked to my brother who has (had?) glaucoma and he received what he called cold laser surgery which sounds like it was laser trabeculoplasty - is that available for dogs?
She's suffered some permanent damage from the attack, however she still sees through that eye. She's on Xalatan in the affected eye and is on prophylactic care of one drop a day in her unaffected eye. I know she's at high risk of going entirely blind though, so is laser surgery an option for a cure in the eye that underwent the attack, with preventative care in the unaffected eye? I wouldn't expect a trabeculectomy to be possible because of the long recovery period.
I also understand that TR BioSurgical has a veterinary implant which appears to be under the trademark of ClarifEYE. Is it on the market yet?
Richard - USA (16902)
It would be a good idea to find a veterinary ophthalmologist to give you some options on treating the glaucoma. Your vet may be able to recommend someone or you can try http://www.acvo.org/locate.htm to find one in your area.
If one eye gets glaucoma, it is most likely the other eye will get it within a year or two. Also, the medication only provides temporary relief.
The success rate for laser surgery is not high. The ophthalmologist or vet could give you the details and best options.
Although it is a heart-breaker for your dog to go blind, it still can be a happy animal. You just have make adjustments for your pet.
Best wishes with the health of your Samoyed, and I hope you find a good solution to the problem.
My dog has an ear infection
November 11, 2008
my dog is 7 yrs old and has an ear infection, she is about 20 pounds. Can I give her aspirin???
pina - USA (16767)
An aspirin is mainly used to relieve pain. Instead, you should treat the infection. See: http://www.earinfectionindogs.com/ for good information on treating the infection.
12-year-old dog whines when having to go up the stairs
November 9, 2008
Just wondering if the cold weather we are having is what is causing the sudden discomfort Buddy is having. We have gone from 75-80* days to lows in the night of the mid 30s.Buddy refuses to come up the steps of our porch to come in for the night. He is 12 years old and about 90lbs.Hes a Rottie-Lab mix. When we call him he takes the first step then whines and stops-my husband tries to pick him up and he whines harder-after much coaxing and bribery he slowly comes up whining the whole time. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Laure - USA (16756)
At 12-years old, Buddy is a senior citizen and has many of the same aches and pains that old humans have. He probably has arthritis that is affecting him.
Dogs actually like the cooler weather better, but if it is damp, it can affect the joints of an older dog.
Although he is a big dog, you might consider cutting back on the food to lower his weight a little. Extra weight is especially hard on the hip joints. Another thing is to look into giving him glaucosomine. It seems to work in reducing arthritis in some dogs.
Daily slow walks help limber up the joints. You could try to walk him around a little before trying to get him up the stairs.
Finally, aspirin or rymidal can be used in cases of extreme pain, but you don't want to use pain-killers on a regular basis.
I hope this helps Buddy.
Dog has a limp and won't jump in bed any more
October 6, 2008
My 8 year old dog has a limp. Do not know if it is arthritis or the hip problem. Can i give her baby aspirins. Cannot go to the vet for i have no money at this time.
P.S. she also does not want to get on the bed any more and hesatates to go up the stairs.
shirley - Canada (16598)
An 8-year old dog can easily start to get arthritis. But it could also be a mild sprain or some other ailment.
The first thing is to make sure your dog is not overweight. That puts a lot of strain on the joints. If she is overweight, start to cut back on the food a little. Also give her some exercise with slow walks. Once she starts walking, her joint should limber up and not hurt for a while.
Although you can give her aspirin, according to her size (see
http://www.school-for-champions.com/animalhealth/aspirin.htm), it is best only to do that when the dog is very uncomfortable. Giving aspirin every day or too often can cause stomach problems.
Give her a little help, if she has trouble climbing. Also keep her weight down and take on some casual walks.
Best wishes on the health of your dog, so that she will not have so much pain.
Can a craw live to be 300 years old?
September 1, 2008
I would like to know age of Craw! can you say?
Somebody tells to me that it's 300 years!! is true?
Soroosh - Iran (16443)
Scientists have found what they claim to be a 400 year old clam. See: http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/10/scientists-fi-1.html. Some tortoises live to be over 200 years old. So it is possible the a Craw lives that long, but I have no statistics on it.
Dog is picky eater
August 21, 2008
WHAT CAN I GIVE THE DOG TO EAT HE IS A LONG HAIR CHOW AND VERY PICKY. I WENT TO CA. NATURAL CHICKEN AND RICE FROM BENIFULL WHICH THE PET STORE SAID THAT THIS FOOD IS BETTER FOR HIM. I SOMETIMES MIX THE FOOD WITH CHICKEN STOCK AND VEG. AND GROUND CHICKEN, HE WILL EAT THE CHICKEN AND LEAVE THE FOOD. I HAVE ALSO TRIED HIM ON THE BENIFULL CONTAINS AND HE DECLINES THAT ALSO, CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS?
- USA (16384)
Just like children, some dogs can be very picky eaters. But often they learn to be picky by giving in to their whims. If your dog knows you will give the tasty chicken when he doesn't eat the other stuff, he will have you trained to do just that.
Changing the dog food should be done gradually, especially with younger dogs. Puppies can even get an upset stomach from a sudden change in diet.
California Natural should be good dog food. If you are switching from another brand, you might mix the two at first.
If you just give him dog food with no other tasty items, he will turn his nose up to it at first, but once he gets hungry, he will eat it. A dog will not starve itself. Hold off on adding things until he gets used to eating his dog food. You can change the flavors, as long as you stick with the same brand.
Once he starts eating his regular food, you can start adding enhancements.
I hope these ideas help you get your dog eating well.
How many aspirin for an 11-pound poodle?
August 9, 2008
I have a 13-yr old poodle that ways about 11 pounds. He suffers from arthritis and joints pain. what is the recommended dosage of aspirin for him.
Liane - Canada (16334)
You can try 1/2 baby aspirin with food to see if it gives him relief. If that is not enough, you could use 1 baby aspirin. 3/4 would be safer, but it is pretty hard to cut that close.
It is best not to give aspirin all the time, since it can upset the dog's stomach. It is better just to use it on the "bad" days. At his age, it isn't unusual to have joint pain. But his joints are really sore, you can make him more comfortable with the aspirin.
How long does a bear live?
July 21, 2008
i was wondering how long does a bear live for.
i was also wondering how many bear years are there in a human year or how many human years there are in a bear year.
- Australia (16248)
A bear in a zoo can live 30 to 40 years. But few bears in the wild live past 15 years, because of disease, lack of food or other predators.
If an average bear lives to 35 and an average human lives to 70, 1 human year would be about 2 bear years.
My guinea pig lived until 9-years old

That is great! You must have taken good care of your pet.
Dog sometimes gets scraps with meal
July 3, 2008
hi thanks for the advice. i got all the questions right. thanks to the information before it. we keep our dog on hard food and she has leftovers sometimes. is this an ok diet?
Toni - UK (16173)
I am sure your dog enjoys the leftovers. You need to avoid giving her food with onions or fruits. Vegetable scraps are fine. But don't give too much food that could cause her to get fat.
They say that 10% scraps is an OK diet.
Overweight lab retriever has hip dysplasia
May 20, 2008
My lab is very overweight and 7 1/2 years old (95ish lbs). I try to cut her food back & exercise her because she's been diagnosed w/ hip dysplesia. I quit walking her because it seemed to really bother her but she still loves to swim. Only, swimming is starting to make her sore. I don't know what to do. I give her 1 gulcosamine (1500 mg)/chondroitin (800 mg) / MSM (750 mg) a day. It's by Nature Made called Triple Flex. Is there something better or a different brand I should use? Also, is there some kind of massage I could do for her hips? One more thing, what amount of food would you suggest for this size lab?
Thank you so much.
Ashley - USA (15977)
95 pounds it heavy for a lab and that extra weight can aggravate her hip problem.
Gulcosamine works with some dogs. Someone told me he his dog yucca, and it really helped. Some gulcosamine mixes include yucca. The problem is that with the hip dysplasia, supplements only help once in a while. You can give her aspirin or Rymadl to help relieve her pain. It is best to use pain relief mainly on days that the pain seems extra bad.
Exercise will help her lose weight. Walking slowly, you can see if she limbers up. Also, it would give her a chance to do some sniffing, which is important to her mental health. Swimming should be good, but it looks like her hips are getting pretty bad.
The suggested amount for a lab is around 4 cups of dry food or 1 1/2 can of food food with 2 cups of dry food. This is once a day. We fed our golden retriever twice a day, with about 1 1/2 cup of dry food at noon and 1 can of dog food in the evening. We would usually mix cooked carrots or rich with the dog food. She also can a few dog biscuits as snacks during the day.
Check with your vet for suggestions about what to do and how to help her quality of life. I have heard that acupuncture has been used on dogs with some success. There are actually some acupuncturists that specialize in dogs.
You hate to see your dog suffer in pain, so I hope you will be able to find some relief for her.
12-year-old Pit Bull has leg problems
April 20, 2008
I have a almost 12 year old Pit Bull. He recently has had problems with his back legs. When he moves slowly his back side sways and at times the legs fold in, but when he is excited he seems to straighten up and jumps (mostly on the couch by the front window) without a problem. He doesn't seem to be in any pain.
His Vet has him on Metacam (for his weight) and Phycox-JS. Recently he has developed what seems to be rawness on his rectum, now causing him at times to drag on his backside. My question is, can I replace the Metacam with buffered aspirin and is there anything a could use to treat the rawness? Additionally, are there anyother human medications with can be safely used on dogs? Thank you.
- USA (15762)
At 12-years old, he is a senior citizen and is starting to have ailments of older animals. Most people hear about hop problems in dogs, but often the knees give out when they get old. Fortunately, it isn't serious arthritis that causes pain. Our old dog would sometimes have her legs fold in. She also needed help jumping up on things.
But one thing is important is to cut back on the food, so that he will lose some weight. An overweight dog will have more leg and hip problems, as well as other health ailments. Just reducing the amount of food in each meal and cutting out snacks will help.
Dog will often rub their rear on the rug or grass if there is itching there. usually, it is caused by anal glands that are impacted. The vet should be able to clean them out. Sometimes it is caused by worms. The rawness is probably caused by rubbing and scratching the anus too much. Your vet should be able to clean out the anal sacs and prescribe some ointment to relieve the itching and rawness.
You should use aspirin only if your dog is in enough pain that he cries. Most ailments can be solved by proper care, so, I'm not a fan of using medication unless it is absolutely necessary to help a true health condition.
Best wishes in keeping your boy healthy and happy.
Is this information up to date?
March 20, 2008
Hi- this website dates from 2004- do you still recomend aspirin for dogs?
thanks- ann k
- USA (15576)
The information on recommended dosages of aspirin for dogs has not changed since 2004. Still, it is best not to freely give a dog aspirin unless absolutely necessary and always with food.
