Will the world end in 2012?

February 19, 2010

Question

Many news paper and some universities are said that the 2012 is the world ending year. what you say is there any probabilities?

Veeresh - India (19252)

Answer

Through the ages, there have been many predictions of the end of the world. The last one was that the world would end in the year 2000. That didn't happen.

The ancient Mayans (in Mexico) ended their calendar cycle in 2012. They then were going to start their calendar over again. However, the Mayan culture itself ended around the year 900. It is unlikely they had any great insight that is valuable today.

Saying the world will end at 12-21-2010 sells newspapers but most likely will not happen.

How does the Earth revolve around the Sun?

January 14, 2010

Question

Dear Sir/Madam,

Can you explain How The Erath revolves around The Sun? Why the distance between them is not zero? and why the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun in a orbit? Why dont them revolve around the Sun Lika electrons revolve around nuclear????, thanks so much

Kilua - Australia (19054)

Answer

Yes, the planets rotate around the sun similar to how electrons go round the nucleus of an atom. The Earth travels at such a speed that its centrifugal force keeps it from falling into the sun, similar to when you spend a rock around you on a string.

December 20, 2009

Question

how are planets revolving around sun without falling?

satish - India (18903)

Answer

The planets are moving at the proper speed so that their centrifugal force equals the pull of gravity from the sun. When you swing a rock around you on a string, you can feel the centrifugal force pulling the rock away from you.

Question

2) It is universe still moving and no ending?

akram - Malaysia (18886)

Answer

The Big Bang is a theory. It may have religious implications. The Universe seems to be expanding. Some say the Universe is infinite, while others say it has a limited amount of matter. There may even be other universes beyond our own.

When did time start?

December 19, 2009

Question

2) How time was made

3) How space was made

4) How space was start

Akram - Malaysia (18890)

Answer

The Big Bang Theory says that time started once the big bang explosion occurred. See: http://www.school-for-champions.com/astronomy/big_bang.htm

But also, it has some religions implications. See:

Question

can we travel in time..
if can, how..??

please answear

akram - Malaysia (18811)

Answer

If you can travel near the speed of light, time slows down for you. For example, you may think it was only 10 minutes, but it might be a year for someone on Earth.

However, no one knows how to travel into the future or into the past.

What is a worm hole in space?

December 9, 2009

Question

For what Worm Hole be made

akram - Malaysia (18812)

Answer

Some mathematical theories about the Universe say there may be what they call "worm holes" where you can instantly travel to another part of the Universe by going through this invisible hole in space.

No one has ever found such worm holes, so we really don't know if it is possible or just a theory.

Explain electron motion and astronomy

November 18, 2009

Question

WHAT IS NEW THEORY OF ELECTRON MOTION AROUND ATOM BECAUSE WE READ IN PAKISTAN OLD THEORY.

CAN I BECOME A GREAT ASTRONOMER.

Mubashar Riaz. - Pakistan. (18691)

Answer

The Bohr model or solar system model of the atom and electron motion is an old theory, but it still helps in many areas, including Chemistry.

There are several newer theories of electrons. One is that electrons form a cloud around the nucleus, and you can't distinguish them. Another theory says they are like strings with wavelengths. It is good to know about the newer theories but also realize that they still are theories and have yet been proven.

To be a good Astronomer, you should have a love of looking at the stars and the sky at night. If you live away from a big city, you can see the night sky much better. Getting a telescope is well worthwhile. But also, an astronomer much know the laws of Physics to understand how to determine the distances and velocities of the stars. There are many tools astronomers use to make their calculations.

Best wishes in your studies.
