How did Aristotle die?
January 30, 2006
How did Aristotle actually die Of old age? no because he was only about 62 but anyways how could someone with so much insight not be a owner of a bigger school everyone pretty much new how smart he was and that he should be a leader. Also what happened with Aristotles son Also i think that Aristotle made such a difference in our world today because he gave us the knowledge and wants us to feel the same way about life and Philosophy!
Brittany - Canada (9870)
In those days most people didn't live to 62. Also, since he died shortly after he was forced out of Athens, he may have died other than naturally. There isn't much information on how he actually died.
Even if he was so smart, people with opposing political views felt he was dangerous, especially since he was close to the king. Note that a smart person is not necessarily one who becomes a leader. Political connections are more important. In the time of kings, it depends on who your parents were.
Apparently, Aristotle's son didn't have the talent he had, since little is known about him or what he did.

Mark Twain invented the suspenders
December 23, 2005
Last night at a trivia game, one of the questions dealt with the invention of suspenders. The answer credited Mark Twain for the invention...What do you know of this???

On December 19, 1981, Mark Twain received a patent for the invention of suspenders.
Why did Clemens use a pseudonym?
December 6, 2005
why did he use a en name
patricia - USA (9272)
Many writers and actors use a different name in their work. Some do it because they want a more memorable name, while others do it to keep their personal life private.
Samuel Clemens used Mark Twain in his works as something that he thought was clever. It relates to an expression used by river-men. But I think he was sorry in later years, because he would have rather be known by his real name.

why did Franklin love to write and invent?
November 11, 2005
why did benjamin franklinlove to write and invent things? did he love being a scientist?was he a great person in reality?
christina - USA (8905)
Franklin was a very curious person who was enthusiastic about everything. He was first a writer, but when he saw something interesting, he would study it and take notes. From his observations, he had a number of inventions and was even considered a great scientist. Then he got involved in helping the country as a diplomat. He certainly was an amazing fellow.
Information on Edison vs. Westinghouse
November 7, 2005
hello, i am a high school student from northern new south wales, australia and i have a physics assignment on the competition between edison and westinghouse to supply electricity, i was wondering if you or your organisation would be able to send me any information reguarding this topic.
thank you for any assistance.
todd - Australia (8845)
Read our biographies on Edison and Tesla for some more information on the competition. Also, the references on Tesla should have more about the competition.
Edison started Edison General Electric Co. to provide DC electricity to the U.S. and Europe. But Tesla invented techniques for supplying AC electricity that would be superior to DC. Westinghouse provided funding for Tesla's ideas. In the end, AC won over DC and Edison got out of the electricity business.

Why was Churchill defeated after WWII?
September 28, 2005
Hello my name is marcelo diaz, and i am doing the IB, in history i chose to my internal essay about why was it that churchill lost the elections after WWII if he resulted to be a great war leader.
hope you can answer my question with enough information, or at least recomend my sites or books were to check.
Marcelo - Uruguay (8330)
Although Churchill did a good job in leading the country through the war, many of his ideas for peacetime were against what the people wanted. For example, he was against public health care and better education for the majority of the population. Also, Churchill had made many political enemies during his career, so he had strong opposition to his continuing in office. He was soundly defeated in the election in 1945 to Clement Attlee and the Labour Party.
But he was later re-elected to be Prime Minister in 1951.

Permission to re-publish article
August 13, 2005
I found your article on King C. Gillette very interesting and think that my customers would enjoy reading about the founder of the products they use every day. I was wondering if I can re-publish your article on my site, providing I site you as the source and provide a link to your web site. Can you tell me if this is acceptable? I don't want to violate your copyright, and am not really sure what the rules are in this area.

Did Ben Franklin patent any of his inventions? What did he have to say about patents and the patent office?
Barb - USA (7585)
The year that Franklin died in 1790, Thomas Jefferson established the U.S. Patent Office. Thus, he was unable to patent his inventions.
