Churchill and learning disabilities

December 26, 2004

Question

I am doing a paper on famous people wiyh learning disabilities and Sir Winston Churchill was my assignment. Where can I find this info on his?

H.D. - USA (5417)

Answer

I know that Churchill had a depression problem.

http://www.ldpride.net/emotions.htm states that he would easily break into tears.

Some thought that Winston Churchill was dyslexic, but official biographers say that was not true.

Worker tripped over cable carrying speech

December 8, 2004

Question

On a speech that was to be broadcast to the US one of the workers tripped over a main cable and broke it just before air time. Someone grabbed the each end of the broken wire and used his body as a conduit so that the speech could be heard in the US. Is this true? If so could you give me the details.

Thanks

Keith - USA (5281)

Answer

Sorry, I don't have any information on that. It sounds like one of the many exaggerated tales about Chruchill.

Doing genealogy research on Gillette

December 5, 2004

Question

For over three decades HEIRLINES has provided Professional Genealogy research services for thousands of clients, including the Gillette Family. James W. Petty, B.A. (History), B.S. (Genealogy), AGĀ®, CGRSSM, a 35-year career, full-time professional genealogist and president of HEIRLINES.com was a close personal friend of King Camp Gillette's nephew, George. Upon his death we inherited many interesting items belonging to King; including his personal Tiffany's sterling silver and gold razor, private papers and other memorabilia related to Gillette family history. One of these days we hope to put all that we have gathered into a collection and possibly a book about the Gillettes. Working on the Gillete family tree has been one of the premier experiences of our career in Professional Genealogy.

Mary - USA (5240)

Answer

Thank you for your feedback. It sounds like you have some interesting memorabilia. We will post your information for our readers.

Edison

On childhood friend of Edison

November 28, 2004

Question

My mother in law's grandfather was a childhood friend of Thomas Edison. His name was Carl Fox. I would like to know if you or anyone who is related to Thomas knew Carl. My mother in law claims that Carl and Thomas rode a train together as children and sold newspapers on it. They also worked together on some inventions. It is also claimed that Carl was really the one who invented the Roll Top Desk.
We have a picture of Carl, Thomas and some friends.

Sandy - USA (5182)

Answer

I've never seen anything about Carl Fox and Edison. But there might be a reference to him in some extensive biographies of Edison. If you want to send a scanned copy of the picture, I would be glad to include it in our material.

Why are there razors for women

November 24, 2004

Question

How does it happen that Gillette which was all made for men suddenly invented a razor for women?.Is there any case studies for this ?
I would be very grateful if you could send me this story as I am interested in it from the educational point on you.
Thank you in advance.

Alicja - POLAND (5151)

Answer

I am not sure when women started to shave their legs and under their arms. It probably started after 1920 in many countries. The Gillete razor for men could be used by women, but the company saw they could make more money by selling one that was smaller and aimed just for women.

Clementine's maiden name

November 1, 2004

Question

In your questionair you stated that Winston Churchill's wife is Clementine Hozier. This in incorrect for her last name is Hosier, not Hozier. I am a Hosier and our bloodline is traced to Clementine and it is indeed Hosier with an "s". Just thought you might want that cleared up!
Thanks!

Karen - USA (4868)

Answer

Thanks for the correction on the name. Note that more resources spell the last name as Hozier than Hosier. I wonder if the family changed the spelling someplace along the line?

Opinions about Franklin

October 29, 2004

Question

Hi! I would like to know, where can I find information about, the opinions that other important people, such as politicians, physicists or people in general, had about Benjamin Franklin

Thanks

Rui - Portugal (4839)

Answer

It would seem very difficult to find the opinions of other people about Franklin unless you knew the specific people. I do not believe there is any one area that lists such opinions. Sorry. Best wishes in your search.

Acquired a copy of the Whitehouse Cookbook

October 23, 2004

Question

I recently acquired a copy of the Whitehouse Cookbook from 1898. Inside there are 2 signatures. On the inside cover is that of Nadinne Gillette and on the fly leaf is the signature of Hattie Gillette. To you knowledge are either of these derectly related to Fannie L. Gillette or King Gillette?

Gary - USA (4769)

Answer

That sounds like quite a collector's item. I'm sorry, but I don't have any information on whether they are related, although I would assume so.

Edison

Was Edison a Christian?

October 23, 2004

Question

Do you know if Thomas Edison believed in Jesus Christ. Are there any writings
that he experienced knowledge from a higher power. I have seen a t.v. program
where they told that he knew his knowledge was from a divine source.

- USA (4770)

Answer

Edison was an agnostic all of his life, never disputing the teachings of organized religion, but never embracing them either. He believed that somewhere in the universe was a great intelligence but he doubted that it had any interest in man. He claimed that when a person died, the body decayed, but the intelligence that it possessed lived on. He though the so-called "spirit world" was simply a limbo where disembodied intelligence waited to move on.
