Getting into Modeling

September 11, 2003

Question

Hello, I am a high school student. I want to learn how to be a model.

Yang - Canada (471)

Answer

If you want to be a model, the best way to start is to check out local modeling schools and modeling agencies. You can find them in the Yellow Pages. Department stores often hire models to display some of their clothes. They especialy look for high school students.

If you have the "look", you might be able to get an assignment. Call up a local modeling agency to find out what you need to do. Note: do not pay to get into an agency. A good agency will not charge, but will take a commission.

Best wishes in your efforts.

Does degree help immigrate?

August 9, 2003

Question

I am a student of Bangladesh. Recently I passed H.S.C. Now i want to do B.B.A. I have also IELTS score 5.5. Now what shoud I do? If i want to do advanced diploma course is it will be helpful for me to get immigration?

Iftekhar - Bangladesh (154)

Answer

An advanced diploma is certainly helpful in whatever you want to do. But what is more important is in the work you are able to do. The diploma may help you get a good job. Even while in school, it is good to investigate the types of work available and what skills companies are looking for in your field.

Getting a job with an international company can open the doors to immigration. Likewise, experience in a field in demand can help you.

Dealing with older workers

May 10, 2002

Question

Good day Ron,

My name is Bronwyn, I am 16 years old and ever since i can remember I have lacked self confidence in myself in different ways. I have recently started a job at a IT company, whereas the guys here are going to train me. In the meantime I work for them, do phoning, etc. The problem is that i am so scared that i wont beable to learn the things that i am supposed to in the time that they expect me to, learn about the company profile its self etc. I get so scared to phone a client because half the time i dont even know what i am talking about, i just say what i am told to say or inquire what they tell me to. Before i started here, i had to mentally and emotionally prepare myself for the unexpected, that was a hard thing for me to do, because i have always been the kind of person who worrys about what people think of me. When i have to make phone calls, i wait until the guys here at the office leave, just so that i will be able to say what i need to on the phone. And now there is this new company that this company that i work for has started and i am going to be put onto the call centre and be given tasks and stuff to do, and i am so scared that i will mess up and not understand certain things. I live in my mind, i do alot of thinking about myself and how i should be regarding self confidence, so i am aware of these things but to actually feel that you have all the confidence you need to do whatever is handed to you, well, i have not reached that place yet, and i really need to for the sake of my job and for myself. I want to be able to ask questions all the time even if they are really stupid ones, i just want to feel confident when asking questions at work, and not feel like a fool because im asking that question and thinking to myself, "they must think i am really stupid asking that" you know,

although i am here to learn and ask questions (computer related and stuff) PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE!! I REALLY FEEL THAT I NEED THIS, I NEED TO FEEL THAT I CAN ACCOMPLISH ALOT BUT I JUST NEED THAT THING IN ME WHERE THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER.

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP, I'VE READ YOUR SITE ON THE NET AND I FIND IT TO BE VERY INTERESTING AND HELPFUL.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and please please, help me.

Thanking you again, Bronwyn. (New Zealand)

Answer

First of all, give yourself a pat on the back for being able to get a job at an IT company. Consider it a feather in your hat that others your age have not been able to achieve.

It is tough starting out on a demanding job, if your confidence is down. What you need to do is use some methods to minimize your mistakes, reinforce your confidence by congratulating yourself for your little successes, and realize that you are not perfect and no one expects you to be perfect.

Companies seldom expect much from new hires straight out of college. They figure it may take the person several months to know the ropes and know what to do. Since you haven’t gone to college yet, they expect you to work hard and not goof off, but also they realize that you certainly aren’t as old or as trained as someone from college.

A good thing to do is to write things down. This will help you avoid making mistakes. You can refer to the material you have written down, in case you forget something.

For example, when someone explains how to do something, you should write it down to make sure you remember it. That is very useful when you start a new job. It is not even a bad idea to write down things they tell you to do.

Likewise, when you are going to make a telephone call to a client, write down what you want to say. In telephone sales, the caller usually has a script of what the sales pitch is. This is to make sure you don’t get confused. If you are worried about not knowing what to say, then you become anxious and your confidence drops.

Part of being prepared for the unexpected is to have various possibilities written out. Being on the phone allows you to look at your notes. I’m sure that most of the people in the call centre have books and papers to refer to. A person can’t know everything. Also, do you have someone to ask, if there is a question you can’t answer? Remember that it is better to ask a stupid question once than to make a stupid mistake over and over.

When I started my first job out of college, they told me it would probably take about 6 months for me to find where the men’s room was. They were being funny, of course, but it was nice that there wasn’t any pressure on me. But I was anxious to learn and did my best to do a good job. I think you are in the same situation. Just don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It is not a race. You have a good opportunity, and you should have fun in the process.

Remember:

Prepare by writing things down, Don’t be afraid to ask for help, Do your best, and Celebrate every successful call you make. That will build your confidence. Best wishes in your job. I know you are going to do a fantastic job there. Keep me informed how things turn out.
