Polar Molecules

Don't understand polar molecules

July 6, 2011

Question

i still dont understand the meaning of polar and non polar molecules.
is it true that polar molecule came from atoms of different charges (H+ O-, will become water of polar), while the non polar molecules came from the same charges (H+ H+ will become H2 of non polar)? why hydrocarbons must be assumed as non polar? is it because of they are covalent bonded??

syaz - Malaysia (21794)

Answer

Whether a molecule is polar or non-polar depends on its shape and how its atoms are configured. Water is a good example of a polar molecule. The two H atoms are situated next to each other on one end of the O atom. The one electron of each H atom is then bonded toward the outer shell of the Oxygen atom. This means that one end of the molecule has two positive (+) nuclei of the H atoms.

The result is that the water molecule has more (+) charges on one side and more negative (-) charges on the other side.

Because the molecules have two sides, water will form a solution with another polar material, such as alcohol.

Why is milk of cow or buffelo is a bit hot?

June 30, 2011

Question

Why is milk of cow or buffelo is a bit hot?

- India (21779)

Answer

The milk should be at the body temperature of the animal. A cow's temperature is several degrees warmer than a human. Also, the rear portion of the cow is warmer than its average temperature. Thus, the milk taken directly from the animal may seem a little warm. But I don;'t think it would be considered hot.

Question

Could you add more questions o every topic, those from easy to average and to difficult level? it's because i wanted to know more from answering it. I'm a college engineering student and chemistry is one of the average challenging subjects of ours.

alma jean - Philippines (21780)

Answer

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll look into adding more, and harder questions.

Best wishes in your studies.

What is the mole concept?

June 13, 2011

Question

what is the mole concept?

fred - USA (21715)

Answer

The mole is a unit of measurement used in chemistry to express amounts of a chemical substance. It is equal to about 6.02214×10^23 molecules of that substance. The mole is widely used in chemistry, instead of units of mass or volume, as a convenient way to express the amounts of materials in a reaction.

What is a short-cut to being a chemist?

April 7, 2011

Question

short-cut to be a chemist

Ilesanmi - Nigeria (21449)

Answer

To become a good chemist, you should really love the subject. It is also important to have a good memory and have skills in the sciences and mathematics.

There is no short-cut to becoming a chemist. In fact, having an attitude of seeking a short-cut to any good profession will usually result in failure.

Reaction versus reduction

March 18, 2011

Question

Shouldn't the second to the last word in the first sentence be reaction, not reduction? Thank you.

Phil - USA (21351)

Answer

Thanks for the feedback and pointing that out.

When materials combine to form new compounds, it is a combination reaction. Reduction is a reaction where the oxidation state changes.

I'll change the wording to clarify the material.

What is specifc gravity?

March 4, 2011

Question

definetion of specific grevity and what is its unit.

pankaj - India (21295)

Answer

Specific gravity is the ratio of the density (mass of a unit volume) of a substance to the density (mass of the same unit volume) of a reference substance. The reference substance is usually water for liquids and air for gases.

Since it is a ratio of the density of one material to another, there are no units. It is just a ratio number.
