Looking for a handle for a sauce pan

December 21, 2011

Question

Hi. We are looking for a handle for a sauce pan bought under the name of Fine Arts Nothumbria and sold in Canada. Do you know if they are still around or who bought them out. My wife purchased a full set from a door to door salesman and we have been using them daily for 5o years.

Regards

James - Canada (22282)

Answer

After 50 years, they probably are out of business. However, check Fine Arts. It may be the same company.

Otherwise, see if you can find a generic handle that will fit.

Best wishes in fixing your sauce pan.

Should I get a shot for shingles?

December 14, 2011

Question

I first noticed the symptones for shingles on Nov. 26th. I went to urgent care on Nov. 30th.
The doctor stated that if I had come to urgent care with 2-3 days after it broke out I might have received a shot. (I'm 62 years old)
I used benadryl for a couple of weeks. I had some pain off and on.
The rash is now dry and has not been bothering me for a while.

A couple of days ago the pain came back.(?) I'm guessing the shingles really never cleared up, just submised.
Is there a possibility that I should go back to urgent care to get this shot and hope it might help or do I need to waite until the shingles has completly cleared up?

Stephen - USA (22274)

Answer

It takes a while for shingles to heal. It often comes and goes. However, it is probably a good idea to check with the doctor to make sure things are going well.

It is a painful disease. Best wishes on an early healing.

Damaged wife's cookware

December 10, 2011

Question

I have been trying to find a handle I destroyed on my wife's favorite pan out of her favorite cookware. Yes, I am in plenty of trouble ! I set it to the side of the gas fire and melted one of the handles off. Fitz-All Replacement pot handles has a replacement handle very similar. It does not have the king or queen's crown on it. The item # is 108901 and the model is 00782-3 by Top's Mfg. This cookware is approximately 42 years old. There is a king or queen's crown on it and all of the handles with 5 stems leading from the crown's band and ending with a circle on top of the stems. She thinks the name of the cookware is King's Club but is not certain because it was a gift from her Mother and she was not the one who purchased the set. We have kept the set near perfect over the years until my stupidity damaged it. Can you please help?

David - USA (22261)

Answer

I'm sorry to hear that the handle on your wife's pan was damaged.

Just as it is very difficult to get replacement parts for an automobile 42 years old, it is even more difficult to get replacement handles on older cookware, especially since many have gone out of business.

If you have a handle that fits, using it is probably the best route to take. It may not look as good, but at least the pan is still usable.

Best wishes in handling the situation.

X-ray Risks

Does x-ray device give off radiation when turned off?

December 3, 2011

Question

Do the device really consume all the rays going outside the machine when when the operation is in progress?

If you are operating a X-Ray machine without having a device which an operator puts on, do this means that he/she is double affected?

Is it harmful to sit near or lean on the machine when the machine is off?

What kind of the food an operator is encouraged to take to fight the power of rays?

Munyao - Kenya (22236)

Answer

An x-ray machine sends out a narrow beam of x-rays. However, some may be reflected off the walls, so it is good to be behind a protective wall when operating the machine.

Patients are usually given a lead blanket that primarily protects their reproductive organs. Workers should be avoid exposure to x-rays because of the risk of cancer and the affect on reproduction.

When an x-ray machine is off, there are no rays being emitted. You can usually hear a short hum when the x-rays are emitted.

There is no real good information on foods that protect against radiation.

X-ray Risks

When should an operator stop using an x-ray machine?

December 3, 2011

Question

What is maximum percentage of the rays that when a body consumes in a life time, a operator must stop operating the X-ray machine?

Munyao - Kenya (22237)

Answer

Anyone operating an x-ray machine on a regular basis should always stand behind a protective shield when activating the machine.

Also, it is good to be wearing a radiation badge that will indicate if you have received an excess of radiation. Many dental and medical groups provide those badges to help protect x-ray workers. The badges are checked once a month.

If you are careful about being exposed, you should be safe, even without wearing such a radiation badge.

Radiation signs indicating you should see a doctor

December 3, 2011

Question

What are the signs which may occur in your body to show that you have been affected by Radiation or you need to see a doctor?

Munyao - Kenya (22238)

Answer

Very strong x-rays can cause radiation burns on the skin. Otherwise, there are no obvious signs from repeated x-rays, unless you get tumors.

Knowing if x-ray machine is up-to-date

December 3, 2011

Question

how would you know if the x-ray machine is up-to-date or something wrong with it. are there any studies to show that finding a dental problem with a tooth by x-raying it just shows that there is a problem early, but the treatment and outcome would have been no different hsd the patent just waited and left the tooth along.

David - USA (22239)

Answer

Dental x-ray machines that are less than 15 years old are generally safer than much older models. The new films used can greatly reduce the amount of exposure needed. In general, the amount of exposure in a dental x-ray is small.

If a cavity in a tooth is detected soon enough, a simply filling will solve the problem. However, if the patient waits too long, the cavity will reach the nerve in the tooth, requiring that the tooth be removed.

Why isn't the NutraEase brand on your list?

November 9, 2011

Question

I understand there is a NutraEase brand owned by HyCite Corp but is not in your list.

Willie - USA (22157)

Answer

Although NutraEase looks like a good brand of cookware, it is not considered waterless cookware. The listing of cookware companies is associated with the page on Waterless Cooking as a healthy way of cooking.

Unfortunately, we cannot list every cookware company, especially that don't really to the purpose of the pages.

TMJ Dysfunction

Bothered by ringing in my ears

October 31, 2011

Question

Hi There,
Im a 20 year old student who has been suffering from tinnitus for the last 4 weeks. I would really appreciate if you could answer a few of my questions. After several visits to various doctors I have finally been diagnosed with TMJ. The dentist took a few an Xray of my jaw and it showed the gap between my bones on each side to be too small. There is still tissue between the bones but its a very thin line. A lot less than it should be.
My tinnitus started a few weeks ago when i was playing around with my mum and dad. I grabbed my mum by the shoulders and was pretending to squeeze her really tightly. While i was doing this I was clenching extremely tightly. Which triggered a really severe pain in the back of my head/top of my neck. Which lasted for about 4-5 minutes. Within an hour the tinnitus started. It initially started in my right ear. But within a few days it started to alternate between ears. I never get the ringing in both ears at once. Its either 1 or the other and sometimes the noise seems to be coming from my head. Within a few days i started getting really bad headaches which were sinus like headaches and migraine headaches. they always kept moving around though. never in 1 place for a sustained period of time. I also heard clicking from my jaw and would get occasional jaw pressure and tingling in my fingers. The thing is Ive had Jaw clicking for many years and never took notice of it till now. It may have gotten worse I'm not a 100% sure. The other day i went to the physio and he said there is tenderness in the upper neck and it feels as if there's a muscle spasm there. Also when i swallow i always hear a crackling sound from my ears and occasionaly even feel a tickle in my ears from swallowing. Ive had my ears checked and there is no hearing loss. The Xrays showed that my muscles in the face are quite large around the jaw area which means that i clench alot. I have also started getting chiropractic adjustments. ive had 3 so far. after every session my tinnitus turns into a low pitch vibrating sound behind my right ear. from a cricket like ringing.
My questions are.
1. Do you think from what you've read, my TMJ and tinnitus are related?
2. ive been wearing a splint now for just over a week. How long do you think it will take for the tinnitus to go away ?
3. have you ever heard of cases where tinnitus starts in 1 year then keeps alternating even in TMJ ?
4. Is my change in tinnitus pitch after the adjustment a good sign and could possibly mean the tinnitus is from the neck misalignment/TMJ as ive 1 can occur as a result of the other.

Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

Kind Regards
Tushar

Tushar - USA (22123)

Answer

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with your jaw and tinnitus.

Tinnitus can often be caused by TMJ, especially since the jaw joint and the inner ear are in such close proximity. Although it can be annoying, the tinnitus probably should go away in a few weeks. Focusing on it makes it more noticeable.

Clenching your jaw is a habit that can be corrected. Every time you catch yourself clenching, tell yourself to relax and stop doing it. Also, it is good the wear a mouth guard at night. You can get an inexpensive one in the drugstore, or you can have one fitted to your mouth from your dentist. However, they are fairly expensive.

One reason for your jaw to be clicking is that your teeth are not properly aligned, resulting in an improper bite and strain on the jaw joint. Your dentist should check your bite.

Narrowing of the gap in your jaw joint is probably due to habitual clenching over the years. Both your doctor and dentist could provide recommendations.

Many of these problems seem to be related to excess tension. Relaxation techniques can help the neck pain, clenching and tinnitus.

I hope these ideas help. Best wishes in a good recovery.

Wants information on Inkor Cookware Co.

October 11, 2011

Question

thank you for letting me know that Inkor waterless cookware is supported by regal ware I bought a set of Inkor pans from my friend in the 1980's. I can't seem to find information about the company itself. Is it out of business and regalware bought it? what is the story behind it - I was also looking for a recipe booklet that may have gone along with it? like how much liquid for which vegetable; for instance corn on the cob?

Linda - USA (22063)

Answer

Regal Ware bought up many of the cookware companies that existed in 60's, 70's and 80's. They still support many of the products from those companies. Some of the longer-lasting companies, such as West Bend, still have their own identities, but most of the others are lost in time. You might check with Regal Ware to see if they have the history of Inkor.

There are a number of waterless cookware cook books available. Most recipes should work with your cookware.

Best wishes in using your cookware.

Food nutrients to protect from x-rays

September 30, 2011

Question

is there any food nutrients needed to help someone taking x-ray repeatedly for broken bone?

Ope - Nigeria (22024)

Answer

There really aren't effective nutrients to use. However, you can get well over 100 x-rays in a year with little risk. However, the doctor or x-ray technician should provide a lead protective shield over your reproductive organs. If the broken bone is in the leg or arm, it can be placed away from critical areas.

Best wishes on recovering from the broken bone.

Healing Touch

When is therapeutic touch an appropriate treatment?

September 19, 2011

Question

When is therapeutic touch an appropriate treatment for a disease?

- USA (21998)

Answer

Therapeutic touch and healing touch are good to reduce stress and perhaps find areas of disease or injury. In some cases, reducing stress can help the healing process. Relaxing of the energy fields can also help in healing.

However, when a disease is caused by some agent such as a virus or bacteria, medication of often needed. Therapeutic touch will probably not be sufficient for the treatment.

Heart Attack

Think I had a heart attack

September 12, 2011

Question

Can you help? In May I was taken to hospital with chest, arm and jaw pain and was told I had suffered a heart attack. However, my angiogram showed my heart was very healthy. They have no idea why I had the attack. For the last year I have been unable to wear a watch as every time I wear one it stops working. I am wondering if this could be anything to do with my attack. I also have an unexplained pain in my right side near my gall bladder. I am a fit and healthy 33 year old female.

Valerie - UK (21979)

Answer

you could have suffered a mini-heart attack that caused the pain but did not damage your heart. It is good that your heart is healthy, although you might make sure your cholesterol levels are good.

Sometimes severe heartburn can seem like a heart attack. Heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus and can last for a few minutes or a few hours.

A gall bladder attack can be confused with heart attack symptoms. Gall bladder pain often moves to the chest, causing pressure and tightness. In addition, like a heart attack, the pain from a gall bladder attack often shoots to the arms, shoulders and neck.

The situation with your watch is strange, and I have no explanation.

It is a good idea to check with a doctor concerning your gall bladder.

Best wishes for good health.
