Can you explain the incorrectness of Lincoln

Topic: Lincoln Gettysburg Address

Question

June 8, 2007

Can you explain the incorrectness of Lincoln saying "dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" as of the date of adopting our Constitution, when, in fact, slaves were counted as three-fifths of a person and not equal? (I wrote a U. S. history book.)

Thomas - USA

13899

Answer

At the time that our Constitution was adopted, various interest groups argued about what should be in the document. Perhaps that "dedicated to the proposition that all male landowners are created equal" would be a more realistic statement.

I think Lincoln was making his statement as a means of persuasion of his view that slaves should also be considered people. But also of note, that "men" did not include women in the group being equal.

This statement wasn't incorrect as much as a rhetorical device.
