Handball gloves
Question
November 24, 2003
Is the ball used for one-wall handball different than for 4-wall?
I've been playing 4-wall with my friend after we work out for about a week. We don't wear gloves, and so far, it still hurts alot. Is that just because our hands aren't used to it? Or is there a softer ball that the one-wall players use?
Thanks,
Luc

Answer
I'm not sure about the ball for one-wall handball. I know the 3-wall ball is more like a raquetball.
One big reason for gloves is that when the hands get sweaty, you can put too much spin on the ball, making it hard for the other player to hit it. Handball gloves aren't easy to find and can be expensive. I've seen guys use constructive gloves effectively. They do a good job at protecting the hands too.
The hands toughen up after a short while of playing. The biggest problem is getting bone bruises, where you hit the ball right on a bone, like a knuckle. Try to roll the ball out of your hand, with a wrist snap. Also, hitting it solid instead of slapping will reduce any pain.
It is a great game.
